I think it probably was a practice of Zen, but it has lost the connection, just as Kung Fu used to be a practice of Buddhist monks in China. Zen is a Japanese translation of Ch'an, a sect of Buddhism. Buddhist monks believed in developing the mind and the body and that by developing certain bodily feats one could discipline the mind or find correlates to strengthening the mind and see the oneness we should all seek to achieve.
The strength of the hand is very important.
A Buddhist master once said that one who reached the ultimate goal knew the answer to this question:
What is the sound of one hand clapping?
