I don't think the actual glass of wine is called a "toaste." I think a toaste is the little speech or blessings someone says before everyone clinks their glasses together and drinks.

A piece of charred bread used to be added to the beverages to absorb off-tastes. I believe this was the origin of the term. The person who dipped the toast out of the keg was supposed to have good luck or something like that.
