Go through it systematically once a year, that way you may have the benefit of both.
In my local church, we use an annual calender to help and sing the Psalms twice a year!

Old Testament only because the New Testament while spiritual, is the product of the Council of Nicea. Many different accounts of Jesus were omitted including the nostic gospels. The council was ruled by a Roman Emperor and therefore more about politics than reality.
The Old Testament includes most of the Torah, which gives you another religions perspective on God as does the Q'uaran. The Book of Mormon is another take on Jesus Christ. You can also read the Book of Josepheus for a more secular view of the children of Israel.
Try taking a class on world religions, it's an eye opener and quite thought provoking including everything from the mainstream religions to Eastern religions (Buddism...) to smaller faiths such as voodoo, wicca and paganism.

The New Testament, though there are many fascinating things in the Old Testament. I find that many do not know about them.
The New Testament is the revelation of the New Covenant. I find that important. Since I am under the New Covenant, I think it's necessary to focus on it. Besides, Jesus is talking to people: That is God on Earth who loves us. I think that is very amazing!

I used to focus on the old testament before I concluded that religion in and of itself doesn't make any sense. My reasoning was because of my perception that it was more realistic (if you can say that about religion) in the concept of God and his relationship with the earth and people. The whole Jesus thing reminds me of an ancient equivalent to a hippy movement.
Now before people go nuts...he asked a question with an explanation. I'm not saying I'm write or wrong, I'm just doing my best to answer his question.

I try to focus on both. Obviously if you do not have an understanding of the Old Testament much of the New Testament will not make sense.

I'm an atheist, by the way.
But really, the Old Testament should not be considered. Modern theologists reject it, and yet so many everyday Christians follow it.
But honestly? "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live"? Stoning a woman to death because she was not a virgin on her wedding night? Killing children for giving their parents cheek?
Most Christians would reject these statements.
What I don't understand is how the say that the Bible is the word of God...but, we don't count that part!
Like God didn't really mean it? Right...
The whole religion is a bit nutty...

The Tanakh or as you call it, the Old Testament. New Testament is boring and obviously fake. Old Testament is atleast entertaining and makes sense.

Neither. The OT is a propaganda document for Israel, and the NT is made up of documents that no one can date, written by so called apostles, and the gospels are written in such a way that makes you wonder if christ even existed, and if so, did these quacks even know him, or just made the crap up?
I will say this much, the contradictions between the 2 abound, and the whole Bible is very consistent in its inconsistencies!

Neither.
But Jesus was a Jew, not a Christian. He did not endorse or advocate a new religion to be created based on his teachings even though many during and after his time insist that he did. Nothing in Paul's writings which is the basis of modern Christianity agrees with Jesus' teachings or lifestyle at all.

I focus mostly on "Lord Of The Rings these days". A fascinating book. Much more fun to read than the bronze age middle eastern goat herders fairy tales you refer to dear.
