Breast Cancer symptoms vary widely – from Lumps to Swelling to skin changes – and many breast cancers have not obvious symptoms at all. Symptoms that are similar to those of Breast Cancer may be the result of non-cancerous conditions like infection or a cyst also.
Many of the breast cancers are diagnosed much earlier than they can produce any symptoms. Routine use of mammogram helps women to identify the breast cancer long before it can cause any symptoms. In the early stages breast cancer may be asymptomatic and women may notice only a breast lump. As the breast cancer progresses the cancer cells can invade in to the surrounding normal structures and other distant organs and this may lead to development of symptoms. Any one or more of the following may occur during various stages of progression of breast cancer.

* A lump (mass) in the breast, these lumps are most commonly painless (or as a matter of fact any other part of the body)
* Swelling or thickness of the breast
* Redness, swelling and or pain in the breast
* Lump in the arm pit area due to the spread of breast cancer to the lymph nodes in that area
* New mole or an obvious change in the appearance of an existing wart or mole
* Areas of warmth or redness in the breast
* Development of asymmetry of the breast
* Inversion or changes in the appearance of the nipple
* Flattening or indentation on the skin of the breast. This may indicate a change in the underlying structures.
* Scaling or redness or a change of color or texture of the skin of the breast or Areola (such as dimpling, puckering, or scaliness)
* Unusual dimpling in the breast which may indicate adhesion to underlying structures
* Discharge from the breast or nipple. This can be clear, dark or bloody in nature.
* Burning, itching or scaling of nipples.
* Pain or tenderness in the breast or underarm area. If this does not relive over time possibility of breast cancer should be considered
* Infection or inflammation of breast
* Development of breast abscess
* Bone pain may occur during the late stages of breast cancer due to involvement of bone
* Change in the mental status, seizure, and neurological events can occur in the late stage of the disease due to involvement of brain or spinal cord
* Jaundice may occur in the later stages of breast cancer due to the involvement of liver or surrounding structures.
* Chest pain and difficulty in breathing may occur in the late stages of the disease due to involvement of lung and surrounding structures.

Any changes in the breast should be reported to a doctor without delay. Symptoms can be caused by cancer or by a number of less serious conditions. Early diagnosis is especially important for breast cancer because the disease responds best to treatment before it has spread. The earlier breast cancer is found and treated, the better a woman's chance for complete recovery !

Breast lumps in general

The first symptom of breast cancer for many women is a lump in their breast. But 9 out of 10 breast lumps (90%) are benign. That means they are not cancers. Most benign breast lumps are
• Areas of benign breast change, causing lumpiness that is more obvious just before a period, particularly in women over 35
• Cysts - sacs of fluid in the breast tissue. These are quite common
• Fibroadenoma - a collection of fibrous glandular tissue. These are more common in younger women
What to look out for
Changes that could be due to a breast cancer are
• A lump or thickening in an area of the breast
• A change in the size or shape of a breast
• Dimpling of the skin
• A change in the shape of your nipple, particularly if it turns in, sinks into the breast or becomes irregular in shape
• A blood-stained discharge from the nipple
• A rash on a nipple or surrounding area
• A swelling or lump in your armpit
If you spot a lump

See your doctor straight away. If you notice anything unusual about your breast, have it examined. Even though most breast lumps are benign, they need to be checked to rule out cancer.

Is pain a symptom?
Pain doesn't usually mean cancer. Many healthy women find that their breasts feel lumpy and tender before a period. And some benign breast lumps are painful. Many women get pain in their breasts for a while, which goes after a time. There may be no obvious reason for the pain, even with lots of tests. Most breast pain is not caused by cancer, but some breast cancers do cause pain, so if you are worried, see your GP.

I would put some warm compresses on the side with pain. Chances are you don't have bi-lateral breast cancer. (it is possible, just not likely.) Do a self breast exam. At the end, squeeze your nipples. Is there any discharge? What color is the liquid? Does it have a smell? Your milk ducts can get clogged and infected. . .

Have you ever breast fed?

Common symptoms DO include: pain, nipple inversion, the skin of your breast looking like an orange peel. . . lumps in the breast, pain under your arms (lymph nodes.)

If you don't have any discharge, the above symptoms or lumps I would watch it for a month and see if it resolves with your menstrual cycle. If you do have any of the symptoms get in to the doc ASAP!!!

Symptoms

Early breast cancer usually does not cause symptoms. This is why regular breast exams are important. As the cancer grows, symptoms may include:

Breast lump or lump in the armpit that is hard, has uneven edges, and usually does not hurt
Change in the size, shape, or feel of the breast or nipple -- for example, you may have redness, dimpling, or puckering that looks like the skin of an orange
Fluid coming from the nipple -- may be bloody, clear-to-yellow, or green, and look like pus

Early breast cancer can in some cases present as breast pain (mastodynia) or a painful lump. Since the advent of breast mammography, breast cancer is most frequently discovered as an asymptomatic nodule on a mammogram, before any symptoms are present. A lump under the arm or above the collarbone that does not go away may be present.
When breast cancer has invaded the dermal lymphatics - small lymph vessels of the skin, its presentation can resemble skin inflammation and thus is known as inflammatory breast cancer. In inflammatory breast cancer, the breast cancer is blocking lymphatic vessels and this can cause pain, swelling, warmth, and redness throughout the breast, as well as an orange peel texture to the skin referred to as peau d'orange. Although there may have been no previous signs of breast cancer and the cancer might be missed in screening mamograms, Inflammatory Breast Cancer is at least locally advanced at presentation (LABC) and Stage IIIB. Immediate staging tests are required to rule out distant metastes which might already be present making it Stage IV.
Changes in the appearance or shape of the breast can raise suspicions of breast cancer.
Another reported symptom complex of breast cancer is Paget's disease of the breast. This syndrome presents as eczematoid skin changes at the nipple, and is a late manifestation of an underlying breast cancer.
Most breast symptoms do not turn out to represent underlying breast cancer. Benign breast diseases such as fibrocystic mastopathy, mastitis, functional mastodynia, and fibroadenoma of the breast are more common causes of breast symptoms. The appearance of a new breast symptom should be taken seriously by both patients and their doctors, because of the possibility of an underlying breast cancer at almost any age.
Occasionally, breast cancer presents as metastatic disease, that is, cancer that has spread beyond the original organ. Metastatic breast cancer will cause symptoms that depend on the location of metastasis. More common sites of metastasis include bone, liver, lung, and brain. Unexplained weight loss can occasionally herald an occult breast cancer, as can symptoms of fevers or chills. Bone or joint pains can sometimes be manifestations of metastatic breast cancer, as can jaundice or neurological symptoms. Pleural effusions are not uncommon with metastatic breast cancer. Obviously, these symptoms are "non-specific," meaning they can also be manifestations of many other illnesses.

any dimpling or puckering of the breast

how to examine urself if u have BC

In the Shower

Fingers flat, move gently over every part of each breast. Use your right hand to
examine left breast, left hand for right breast. Check for any lump, hard knot
or thickening. Carefully observe any changes in your breasts.
Before a Mirror

Inspect your breasts with arms at your sides. Next, raise your arms high
overhead.
Look for any changes in contour of each breast, a swelling, a dimpling of skin
or changes in the nipple. Then rest palm on hips and press firmly to flex your
chest muscles. Left and right breasts will not exactly match - few women's
breasts do.
Lying Down

Place pillow under right shoulder, right arm behind your head. With fingers of
left hand flat, press right breast gently in small circular motions, moving
vertically or in a circular pattern covering the entire breast. Use light,
medium and firm pressure. Squeeze nipple; check for discharge and lumps. Repeat
these steps for your left breast.
