I would use something that is easy clean, presumably the people using the room and the seating are less than daisy fresh.
If you go with upholstered pieces, slipcover them in something substantial, a natural fabric that can wick away moisture and evaporate it before it sinks into the filling. Wash them frequently and use Febreze type products in between, or make a fabric spray with some vinegar and lavender oil...the vinegar dissipates to leave a sweet smell behind, without all the toxic chemicals that are in commercial fabric sprays.
The better choice is more likely to be something along the lines of lawn furniture, which will be easy care, maybe not cushiony but comfortable because of the shape. Something like an adirondack chair, or molded plastic.
You could also go with wood fibers like rattan or wicker.

i think that hassock is good for gym, it's great idea to buy hassock ottoman, with beautiful hassock cushions ;)
it takes very little place, is very comfortable
it's easy to clean it ...
so you can try this one
