I set up two chairs and put up a sign that says "Can I pray for you?" and simply let students, faculty and staff come up and talk. If they need a hug, I hug them. If they need a prayer, I pray for them, with them, over them - whatever they need. If they need to talk, I listen. Think it would get a response?

Mostly I'm asking because the bulk of campus ministers I've seen have been in-your-face, loud, and often condescending. I'm curious whether the opposite would have better results.

"Can I pray for you" sounds like you have all the answers and are condescending to help out a poor student in need.

"Can I pray with you" sounds more like what you're trying to say.

You'll get a different response than if you put up a sign that said "There's only one way to God" or "Evolution is a hoax". That's the normal way to generate discussion and get people interested in your campus group.

I disagree with those who would give you crap about even being there. EVERYONE is there... gay/lesbian, chess club, socialists, libertarians, drug legalization, anti-war, etc. so why not religion? Seems like we're singling religion out for some reason to say they can't be there when these other groups can.

I am sorry. I don't believe in Campus Ministry for any reason. Your idea sounds better then most because you would be non-intrusive. But when I was in college I wanted an education not a religious experience.

i think it's a very effective way to minister.

When i minister to homeless i try to listen to their needs and pray for them. i think people appreciate that people aren't trying to just give them a message but are showing them the love that the message of God's love contains.

Jesus met people's needs and we as his believers should do the same. i highly reccomend two books:

The Conspiracy of Kindness (by Steven can't remember his last name)

The externally focused church (by Rick Rusaw and Eric Swanson)

Blessings,

Nickster

Real college is for education, not for the spreading of schizoid delusional mental disorders like religious superstitions.
I am happy to live in a modern civilized country where religious proselytism is forbidden by law in public education institutions dear.

Ya know what would be an even better idea...if you held up a sign that said can i do Aerobics for you? It would have the same exact effect on the person.

You'd get a much better reaction than the thumper mentality.

You'd probably also upset people of other faiths.
