in 1/2, 1 is the numerator and 2 is the denaminator. what do we call the / ?

Forward slash. Also can be known as the division symbol, divided by, forward stroke, oblique, slant, or scratch comma.

It's very common in computer programming, common mathematics, and in short informal notes. Through-out history is has been used in many ways to symbolize changes in sentence structures and math equations.

OVER. It is read as "1 over 2" or "numerator over the denominator" (not denaminator)

In this case you'd call it a division sign; but in other cases it's called a virgule.

Ohh I see what you are saying. it took me a minute, but I have been looking and I am pretty sure it is just the bar. I don't think they have named it.
