The only true Goju Ryu... Okinawan. The three main lineages.

Shoreikan lineage

Jundokan lineage

Kenshikai - is the closest to the oldest in the development of Goju Ryu. It is from Seiko Higa, who is the only person awarded instructor status by GM Miyagi. Higa Sensei trained with Higaonna Kanryo along with his senior Miyagi. When Higaonna died, Higa remained with Miyagi as his assistant.

The characteristics of Goju Ryu are like the bamboo. At the root, it is thick, wide and rooted. Going up the stalk it is flexible and yielding.

Crushing, gripping and tearing. Coiling, piercing and pounding.

Goju Ryu is summed up in the "Poem of the Eight Fists":

-The mind is one with heaven and earth.

-The circulatory rhythm of the body is similar to the cycle of the sun and the moon.

-The way of inhaling and exhaling is hardness and softness(GM Miyagi got the name for his art from this verse)

-Act in accordance with time and change.

-Techniques will occur in the absence of conscious thought.

-The feet must advance and retreat, separate and meet.

-The eyes do not miss even the slightest change.

-The ears listen well in all directions.

This poem is from a very old book call Wu Pei Shi... BUBISHI in the Okinawan Hogen. It applies to all Chinese MA. Most teachers I have seen don't integrate its teachings into their own. If they would, they would understand their art more.

Goju Ryu is a fierce system. Just like all the Okinawan Arts, it contains grappling, pressure points, Ki development, throws... all the techniques necessary to protect and preserve your life.

There is alot more but you have to go learn it for yourself.
