For subjects like George Burns or craggy weathered looks I use a lot of film and try different lighting. One that worked best when I was doing Ranchers was to use a hard flash off center Left or right with light fill bounced upward. I think a distinctive face like his should not be soft focused to hide the lines but I have had to use that for some similar customers.

Loved George! I have the DVD collection of his original TV show.

As for faces and lighting, Michael Rennie was the man I would have liked in front of my studio lights. His cheek bones were amazing and I would have so much fun with my lights on them!
