Mate im australian and i have a 60GB you just have to look around to what stores still have 60gb in stock if not try ebay.com.au, or just replace the 40gb harddrive with a bigger one. (i have 300gb in mine now)

You can easily plug in another harddisc.

However, as the 40 GB model has absolutely no PS2 backwards compatibility, you will never get the full features of the 60 or 80 GB models.

If you want to upgrade HDD - any 5400 RPM 2.5" SATA HDD will work. 250GB will cost you around 170 US $. 7200 RPM can be used too, but Sony advises 5400 RPM. Nothing could be done with lack of compatibility with PS2 games.

harvey norman in my town (rural NSW) still has a few units left. ebgames even has the 80gb model. try looking around you definitely find a few, even used ones on ebay.com.au. good luck!
