Wow. Well Mad, where to begin. Qualifications: To enlist you need minimally a high school diploma -- the Army only requires a GED. To be an Officer, a four year degree.
ASVAB score: It's an aptitude testto see where you are educationally and what your good at doing. The higher your score, the more technical the field you can train for.
Pay: You get paid on the 1st and 15th of every month -- regardless of your MOS.
Down time: It really depends on where you are. If you're doing a six month rotation to Okinawa Japan, it's unaccompanied and generally, you don't REALLY take leave time while deployed. If you are in the rear with the gear, you can take leave and go just about anywhere your wallet will allow. Unless you are deployed, doing a field op or have "the Duty," you work your 8-10 hour day and go home. If you have the duty, you're on post for the full 24 hours plus a work day. Vacations: you earn up to 30 days per year. You can save up to 60 days without fear of losing lave time. If you go over 60, you have to submit a request to keep your earned leave time and explain why you weren't able to take leave to avoid having an excessive leave balance. I once had over 90 days on the books. You can also sell back your leave time, but that's another matter.
Training? All you do when you are in the rear is train! You can do the Mountain Warfare Course in Bridgeport, Ca., Urban Warfare at Camp Pendleton, Ca. -- used to be at Ft. Irwin, SERE School, Jump School, CAX out in 29 Palms, Ca.. All sorts of training and schools.
Will you be sent to war? The current Commandant has stated that every Marine will get to do a tour. My buddy Matt (a GySgt) has yet to go. He probably won't. his position is much too valuable -- but then, regardless of your MOS, every Marine is an infantryman!
Free? Nothing is free. But you DO get things at a reduced rate! Meals at the chow hall, cheap. Hair cut at the barber shop, cheap., etc..
Pros: Great training. Great travel -- you get to see some of the worse the world has to offer! -- Engineer Alley in Pohang, South Korea, etc.. You get to meet all kinds of people. If you've never been anywhere or done anything, I promise you, that will soon change! You will be given opportunity to see and do more than most people ever get to in two or three lifetimes. I've been to the North Pole, the South Pole, the deserts of the Middle East (and the U.S.), the jungles of North Eastern Thailand, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai in the UAE, lay overs in Guam and Germany...
Cons: Valuable time spent away from my son and family. Loss of friends (lost 47 men in 2 1/2 years to "training mishaps" and 11 men in three nights of intense fighting -- mostly to "friendly fire" by the Air Force). You could get killed or severely injured -- but then, that could happen to you here and here, it would have been for nothing.
Life is a grand adventure. You just have to live it!

That's a long list...
I'll focus mainly on the last four:
Training: You start with basic, which is just simple physical and that sort of thing. You must also get qualified for the M16a3.
War: Chances are no. Bush announced that withdrawals will be happening by the summer of '08, which means we don't need MORE soldiers over there.
Free: Basic things such as food and housing. At least you aren't paying property tax or anything.
Pros: All branches are an extremely rewarding experience that makes you a better man or woman. The Marines are no exception, and they have a little bit of everything, including soldiers (army) planes (air force) and boats (navy).
Cons: While the Army have all the heavy-duty firepower, the marines are more of a fast, light assault group, which means worse support, which contributes to why the marines have a higher (modern) fatality rate in combat.
The most elite infantry unit in the entire US military that isn't part of Special Operations is the US Army Airborne (101st and 82nd). You should consider them too- if you've got the balls for it!
Rendezvous with destiny, friend!

a recruiter can answer all these
Qualifications are that you pass the ASVAB test, with at LEAST a 31. Your job you choose will depend on that test and how well you did in certain categories that would be relevent to your job. Like mechanical if you want to be a mechanic, clerical if you want to be an administrator. Yes you get paid twice a month i believe.
You will get 30 days paid vacation a year, you also get like 4 days for Federal Holidays. The training would consist of recruit training at either MCRD Sand Diego or Parris Island, it depends if you are on east coast or west. Afterwards you get 10 days at home, then You go to BCT (basic combat training) where you learn a whole **** load of stuff. Afterwards you go to your job training AIT (Advanced Individual Training).
You will NOT be sent to war right away. Everything is not free, things like toothpaste and shaving stuff has to be paid for by you, but weapons and ammunition and other gear is issued to you.
Pros- Discipline, you will know what Honor, Courage, and Commitment are and you will stand by them. You will be a part of a family for the rest of your life, if you stay active for at least 4 years you are entitled to free dental, medical, and free college tuition.
Cons- The possibility of deployment, a long way away from your family, and of course we have a war going on. Dont let anything stop you from accomplishing what YOU want.
