The PS3 will turn it's self off if it overheats, but it most likely wont as long it's in a room with a temperature under 90-100 degrees.

Also, you can have it standing vertical or lying horizontally, both ways are just fine. DO NOT BUY AN INTERCOOLER. Intercoolers will void your warranty and will probably cause damage to the PS3 by interfering with the PS3's built in cooling system.

Don't worry, the PS3 has a very low defect rate of .2%. (the xbox 360's failure rate is 33%)

I think that the PS3 turns off automatically "if" it ever overheats but I'm not 100% sure. I read in the Users Manual that if the PS3 ever over heats the green light power button will flash yellow/orange. And if it the green power button flashes orange/yellow just turn the system off.

If it ever overheats you need to leave it off for an hour or so and let it cool off, then after it cools off you can start playing again without any problems.

My PS3 has never overheated, I am just telling you what I read in the Users Manual.

i am almost 100 pecent sure that when the ps3 starts overheating then it will automatically turn off but it does not matter if you put it on the side or not
