How is it at all possible for something to come from nothing? There has to be an origin of the matter or energy or whatever it was that created the universe.

If an explanation is too long to type out, can you post a link to a nice reference explaining atheism - preferably not a 20 page explaination?

WHERE DID GOD COME FROM?

He always was. That's what makes him God and not just some guy.

you say it is not possible for something to come from nothing-then you want me to believe that god created this universe from nothing--when you make up your mind maybe we can begin to have an understanding or at least an agreement to disagree-----just my thoughts-smile and enjoy the night

Q. How is it at all possible for something to come from nothing?
A. Define "Nothing" until you define what nothing is its an incoherent statement.

Q. There has to be an origin of the matter or energy or whatever it was that created the universe.
A. If the Universe is everything that is. Talking about an origin is senseless. Matter, energy, time etc. are all part of the universe.

Plus by saying that there has to be an origin for everything what are you really saying. That if everything does not have an origin then everything would be nothing? You don't really believe in God now do you - You believe in the power of nothing.

I`m an atheist because I don`t have/need any imaginary friends. Everything in the Universe has a naturalistic explanation. Why believe in the supernatural? Email me if you really want to open your mind to becoming an independent free thinker. Atheism is great! It clears out the cognitive cob webs of bronze age myths.

Capatain J - No its not circular reasoning. Because "Time" is apart of the universe it does not supercede the Universe. If you`re familiar with Einsteins theory of realitivity you know that time is realitive. There is no Universal clock clicking throughout the universe. By saying how old it the Universe you are taking something that is within the set (time) and applying it to the whole set (The Universe)
You cant do that. According to set theory a set can be a
sub-set of itself but a set can never be a member itself. Everything in the universe comes from other things in the Universe. You cant take something in the Universe like time and say Ohh well the Universe itself must follow the same rules as things within in the Universe. You`re wrong.

To be honest, I haven't met a single Christian who understands atheism. They either think it's: A) A religion B) Devil worship C) Hating god And I'm not talking about people on R&S, I'm talking about the ones I've met throughout my life. Edit: "e.citizen" down there just did a very nice job of proving my point.

What does your question have to do with atheism? You're talking about two completely different subjects. If you are curious about the possible origins of the universe, check out this article on Brane Theory:
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/astronomy/bigbang_alternative_010413-3.html
This is rapidly replacing Big Bang Theory as a more viable explanation for certain features that the Big Bang can't explain.

Atheism is simply a lack of belief in God and, in some cases, anything else that's supernatural.

The words are "I don't know". Not knowing something is no reason to just make some crap (like a god) up.

If a god can create itself then why not the universe?

Besides, what if someday scientists actually explained the creation of the universe without needing a god? That would be the end of the belief of pretty much anyone who used such a god of the gaps argument.

The best, simplest, and most accurate definition/explanation of atheism has nothing at all to do with matter, energy, the universe, or origins of any kind.
Short and simple, an atheist does not think gods are real. Some may confuse that simple statement by wondering if any given atheist has a belief gods are imaginary, or a feeling, but those are semantic issues, however one chooses to phrase it, an atheist does not believe in/rejects the notion of/has no compelling reason to believe in, a god or gods.
Now, any given theist or atheist may or may not have a science background, an opinion about the origin of the universe (informed or not), life, the planet, or they may simply say they do not know. but those opinions, for any random atheist, have nothing to do with atheism, anymore than their opinion about vaccines, sports cars, or fruit cake.

I can see where you're confused. Looking through the countless volumes of atheist dogma can be difficult and time-consuming, and it really is such a thoroughly complex belief system. I'll try to explain it within your twenty-page limit, but I'm not making any promises...

Atheism is the absence of belief in gods. That's all it is. It has nothing to do with the origin of the universe, except in that atheists do not say that any gods were involved.

How do you know that the energy that Atheists believe created the universe wasn't just "was" like the God that you (and other religious persons) believe in.
Both theories are just trying to figure out the same crazy world and where it came from.

educate yourself a little on evolution theory. I did and it is very interesting to say the least. search the Internet and find different sites that cover this subject. or go to your local library and check it out there.

Atheism: simply means lack of or no belief in a god or gods.
anyone that believes there is a god or gods is NOT an atheist all others ARE atheists.

Your question doesn't seem to be much about atheism, but rather the need to know the answers of the universe.

Some people seem to need to feel like they know all the answers right now, and some people look at it as a puzzle, with some pieces figured out, some suspected of fitting someplace, and others still missing. I'm fine with the puzzle way of seeing it. It would be nice to know, but I know that we'll probably never *really* know all those answers, and I'm fine with that. I just don't see the answer involving a deity however.
