I don't know what state you live in but as a Dealer myself who has had customers with this identical problem. They were denied trying to purchase handguns, while a job related security clearance was underway. I would make this suggestion. Take a certified copy of your birth certificate to the nearest State Police installation or Barracks closest to where you live. Explain your dilemma to them and they should be able to run a computer check and make sure it's not an ID issue that will come back and haunt you later. They have authorization to make computer updated data entry changes once they are satisfied who you are and prevent this from happening again in the future. I know for a fact that this is done.Good Luck..

You should have filled out some forms right then and there when denied.

I find it hard to believe that you were denied because of a background check for a job.

The best way is to go and try to buy a gun. If denied ask what can be done to find out why you are being denied.

JD, I must correct you. It IS NICS, National Instant Check System.

Below is a link to their website where a "challenge" form can be printed, completed and submitted to find out why an individual was denied the purchase of a firearm. Quite often, the ruling is overturned when an appeal is made.

Now, if the person who asks this question lives in one of the 13 states that has their own agency that conducts the criminal background checks in a POC (point of contact) capacity, the system is normally not referred to as NICS. For example, in Pennsylvania, it is referred to as PICS (Pennsylvania Instant Check System)

Could be mistaken identity or someone could have stolen your ID. I car pool with a guy who has been through all that, my security folks thought I was being hauled away when they came to talk to me about him very early one morning, but he has never had any issue buying guns.

You must clear the FBI NICS check. Your dealer will have to do it for you.
Don't be embarrassed about it. It happens.
Make sure to provide your SSN on the 4473 form. If you are turned down again, ask the dealer for advise. We have forms that you use to contest the NICS response. You may be a victim of identity theft and you need to have it cleared up.

Well, it's either another possible embarrassment... or no weapon... it's YOUR choice... you aren't going to get an answer to this on here.

You are only denied the right to buy a gun, if you are suspected of some criminal activity.
