I want to buy something I can play hd dvd's and regular dvd's on. I saw something for sale called an "upconverter". Will that play HD DVD? Do I need to buy that and a straight up HD DVD player? Please help. Thanks.

A DVD upconverter allows the video signal to be output in HDMI, although my experience is little difference if any versus the regular DVD player. It will not play HD DVD's. A dvd upconverter is like this, a DVD is in 480p ( i think) and you can not increase the resolution (like a picture) because it is fixed, although you can increase some properties though, regardless I would tell you to not waste your money on the upconverter.

I bought one, used it, and returned it.

If you buy a HD DVD player that also plays DVD's, then the DVD's played would be upconverted to the HDMI signal, but it will not ever be true HD regardless.

A real HD-DVD player like the Toshiba A3 will up-convert standard DVD's as well as play true HD-DVD's.

The up-converting players do some tricks to 'magnify' standard DVD's. While it does work, it cannot really increase the resolution/information in each screen. And these players cannot play real HD-DVD disks.

I have put a link below to Shopzilla that show many stores selling the HD-A3. Check the Friday ads to see if anybody local is selling it cheaper or buy from one of the internet sites.

Go to BlueJeans for a good HDMI cable. My 10 foot cable cost me $38
