The Amplified Bible brings out the meaning of the words. The problem I have with it is that it seems to have been translated and compiled by someone who gets paid by the synonym. For example, Genesis 1:1 is ten words long in most Bibles; it's FOURTEEN words long in the Amplified Bible. There are 21 extra words in John 3:16.

It can be beneficial in some passages, but for most the "amplification" is overdone. I would recommend it if you're doing detailed studies, but for everyday reading I do not recommend it.

Any time you translate something from one language to another, you will never get all the subtle shades of meaning in the original language to come out in the second language. The Amplified Bible takes one of the most literal translations of the Bible (the New America Standard Bible) and adds to it (or amplifies it) but using more than one "translation" for many of the words or phrase in the Bible. They try to give all the subtle shades of meaning that they can. Most of those amplifications come from the works of some of the most respected Christians scholars and translators.

It is a good translation that I enjoy reading. (It is my wife's favorite). But I sometimes have to be careful not to think of the three different shades of meaning it might give to one verse as three different "steps" in the verse or something. I have to remind myself that they are "amplifications" of one idea. So I usually will read it with another translation along side. It should probably be treated more like a Bible commentary then an actual translation.

Unfortunately, the Amplified Bible is currently out of print, and copies of it are difficult to find. Which is too bad because it is an excellent source to use along with your more traditional word for word Bible translation.

It is a wonderful translation. I use the amplified when I want a very complete meaning, it gives the verses more adjectives, explains the verse more fully.

I have a Joyce Meyer Amplified Study Bible, and I love it.

All translations have their strong points, the Amplified is great, but not for quick reading. It will give you a very clear view of the scriptures.

All I know is that it was published by the Lockman Foundation, the same folks who gave us the New American Standard Bible.

If you want to compare versions, including the Amplified Bible, look at http://www.biblegateway.com
