As someone else mentioned, it is a symptom that can indicate a problem and a definate risk would be operating a moving vehicle or machinery. Falls are also a risk as one can then be at risk of breaking a hip, arm, leg, head injury. It would be in your best interests to talk with your family dr who can run some routine tests such as bloodwork to rule out iron deficiency/anemia (please do Not take iron supplements unless directed by one's physican as it can cause liver damage) and may want to get a cat (computerized axial tomography) scan which is painless. If the basic tests come back as negative (normal), the next dr to go to for vertigo should generally be an ent (ear, nose, throat dr). Your family dr may be able to refer you to one and not sure if you have an hmo and need an official referral anyway. Hoping that you feel better real soon!

There is an association for those with inner ear problems which can cause vertigo (not that you necessarily have problems with the inner ear ;) http://www.vestibular.org Please do Not try vestibular exercises until finding out the root cause of the vertigo as some illnesses can be worsened by those types of exercises such as meneire's (and not saying that you have that either :) A physical or occupational therapist may provide vestibular rehabilitation if needed, and a referral from the family dr is generally needed.

Vertigo is a symptom - it's the sensation of movement where there isn't any. Usually folks feel a spinning sensation even when their head is still and the sensation often gets worse when the head is moved. It's frequently accompanied by nausea or vomiting.

MOST often, the cause of vertigo is something benign but OCCASIONALLY, vertigo can be caused by something dangerous like a brain tumor or a brainstem stroke. If you have concerns, a visit to the doctor can help sort things out.

Eliminate Vertigo and Dizziness

I've had vertigo... it's a horrible feeling----when it hits you it makes you feel like you are DRUNK---you lose your footing, feel you NEED to hold onto walls just to walk... you get dizzy and light headed.... If you have BENIGN POSITIONAL VERTIGO (as I get)... all it involves is CRYSTALS that become lose inside your inner ear and fall on a nerve basically cutting it temporarily off. There are SEVERAL good websites that describe BPV and even give VERY SIMPLE head movements that will gently force these crystals off the nerve and alleviate your vertigo.....

Yes it can be. It can be severe enough to make you fall and then you can really hurt yourself or somebody else.
You should find out what is causing it. Vertigo can be from an ear problem to something far more severe.
