The blinking red lights are the tell all... in fact not so many years ago the stop signs on the side dont even exists... if you break either the "front plane" or the "rear plane" of the bus while the red lights are activated, you are breaking the law.

So even if the stop sight does not come out for some reason, you still must stop for the red lights on the top of the front and rear of the bus.

It is illegal to pass a school bus which has it's red lights flashing.
Flashing yellow lights are just a caution in preparation for stopping.
Stop signs on the side of the bus come out when the door is opened.

Watch the lights first, then the signs.

No it isn't against the law. Before the stop sign comes out, there is a blinking yellow light on the bus which is a common sign to beware, caution should be taken, something is about to happen. The bus is slowing at this time and you should take consideration that it is about to stop.

greater effective than probably this relies upon on how the regulation reads on your state. In Georgia, it relatively is a substantial violation to bypass a school bus whilst the lighting fixtures fixtures are on and the sign is out. even even with the undeniable fact that the driving force might have been chatting with a parent, there is the prospect that a new child must be close to and ought to get off the bus. subsequently the regulation is in consequence, and you're assume to offer up on the two factors of the line in Georgia until eventually the line has a actual divider. The violation/cost is in the comparable type as D.U.I., Reckless driving...all substantial violations in the eyes of the states and in the eyes of the coverage companie$. to respond to your question, might desire to the driving force get a cost ticket...I say definite. The regulations are enacted for a reason, and the driving force passing a school bus with that's emergency kit (lighting fixtures fixtures/supply up bar and sign) activated is inherently risky in itself. So I do have self assurance that he/she might desire to get a cost ticket. in case you acquire the fee ticket, and the lighting fixtures fixtures weren't on...i could circulate to court and contest the fee ticket. once you circulate, i could tell the courts which you already know the cost, however the lighting fixtures fixtures weren't on. enable them to appreciate if the supply up sign grew to become into out or no longer. i could tell the courts that the driving force grew to become into purely chatting with somebody...it relatively isn't a assure which you will get out of it, yet once you act like a gentleman and enable them to appreciate you probably did no longer malicously try this with dismiss for the regulation...perchance they might have mercy on you. Judges are people to and a few of them are information. sturdy success!

The Stop Arm (which is what that stop sign is called) comes out at the moment that it becomes illegal to pass the bus.

Some bus drivers agree with you however, and crack their door open before stopping to activate that sign. but THAT is against the law, and many state highway patrols get really upset when they see bus drivers doing that.

The sign comes out when the driver is about to let children off. Often the driver will let the closest vehicle clear before putting the sign out. It would likely be against the law for him to be putting out a sign stopping traffic, and putting the flashers on, while his bus is moving, anyway. Pay your ticket.

And why does it matter? The red lights on the front and back of the bus were flashing right? So just come to a stop and don't worry about this crap. Worry about something important like if maybe the no parking zones should be painted pink instead of yellow. Sheese!!!
