The churches want to control you will tell you so. Even in the disastrous death funeral, priest still have reason for why the person got kill the way it was.
God, in the old testimony, ask someone to kill his own sons to proof his loyalty. What kinds of madness this is?
Yet, the brainwashed will always find ways to defend these.
Look how many people actually make a living by being part of this madness.
It is money, control, greed and power on the controller's side.
It is fear, greed, cowardliness on the followers' side.

How can anyone think about all of undeserved suffering in the world and think that God is loving and merciful? I don't get it. It seems to me that only a apathetic or malevolent God would be logically possible.

Even his most ardent supporters claim that he allows billions of people to be tortured in hell for eternity.
That is the exact opposite of love and mercy.

it makes me feel so good inside, i get all sweaty, my heart starts racing, and things happen to my body that i can't even explain, i wish there was a button i could push to get that feeling all the time, you know, like women have.
