A lot of fundamentalists are very ignorant and hate and fear everyone that is different from them.
However, even though I'm not christian, when someone sneezes I usually just say "Bless you" out of habit. Of course, if I said it to someone and it really pissed them off, I probably would remember not to say it to them again.
Actually, I've always thought that blessing someone for sneezing was probably one of the silliest things ever invented. If you get a blessing for sneezing, it seems like barfing should get you a sainthood.

I think they can't understand how someone can be happy without believing in some form of religion or afterlife. It just doesn't compute for them. Plus, they think you'll go to hell for not believing in God, and they don't wish eternal torment on you over what they think of as your ignorance of the "ways of the Lord." So they say "God bless you" because they don't want you to suffer eternal damnation.
I wonder, if you told them you were a Buddhist or a Hindu, would they leave off the conversion talk and just ask questions? They'd probably be a little more accepting of someone who is a completely different religion than one who has no religion at all.

Habit more then anything, Each of use, in our own way believe in something, must don't understand what they can't control. If you aren't a God person, that should be ok, if you are a good person then nothing else should matter. People are afraid of thinks they don't understand, so they use hate to hide behind. I've seen a lot of Godly people who pray one day & go sin the rest of the week, now thoughts are the ones we should be afraid of! At least you are being honest with yourself & others should be happy that you are good with or with out GOD.

Perhaps you are looking at the issue in the wrong light, or perhaps the individuals you are writing about are somewhat over zealous, but the love of God causes a person to feel a genuine concern for you and your eternal welfare. Age has a way of causing one to spend quality time in reflection. When you find something at the store that you feel is just incredible do you simply take it home and put it on the shelf or do you call your friends and tell them about your find? Try looking at the issue as a positive experience and feel the concern that people genuinely feel on your behalf.

I am aware of your problem,
Some people with strong cultural and religious background find it hard to believe that there are other beliefs than their own, (thats what I believe) I myself think religion is personal and should be "don't ask, don't tell" because many people now in days are sensative and some get confrentational. Alot of people are not open minded and dont accept people as they are......
Good luck

Some religious people have inherited a false attitude that they are better then the none religious people. It always amuses me that the people who claim to be the most righteous are the same people who have no respect or tolerance for others beliefs and are the quickest to insult anyone who doesn't believe what they believe.

Most people of religion think themselves open minded and considerate towards others, but really they are not, they want to push their "faith" (or weakness as I call it) on others.
Stand your ground and don't worry about them they are the ones that are weak for needing a belief in something that can't be proven.
(fwiw- I believe in God, Heaven and Hell, but I do not like religion at all.)

Because that is what they believe. I get mad at people when they say "I don't believe in God". But that doesn't mean I hate them. You just have different beliefs. I am a catholic, so of course I believe in God. And besides you should learn to not let it get to you when someone says "God bless you" It is just a saying.

People have the urge and the need to always be right... its infuriating. I'm in the same boat as you are (except I believe in god but not in heaven/hell) and people try to "christianize" me all the time. I've come to believe that people are just intimidated by the fact that you don't live a "holy" life or one blessed by god's presence....
