I have a better idea. dump the idiotic thought.
I can go on and on how hideous this chase idea is but you know it too that is why you are trying to fix it.
IT CAN'T BE FIXED!
ACTUALLY THIS IS A AWAY TO FIXING THE OUT COME OF THE SEASON IN RACING INSTEAD OF HAVING THE PERSON WHO SHOULD HAVE WON, WIN.
I am not a Gordon fan by no means.
It is there thinking of getting what once was a great series to become some sort of ball contest at the end of the season.
To segregate the field and then give the top bunch 5000 points? Why is that to MAKE sure one of your buddies can't catch you and pass you in the points? Whats up with that? I don't get it?
It worked great without it. If there was a problem all they had to do is give the winner of the race 5 or 10 point more for the win and he or she would be honored for the accomplishment.
Lets talk some more rule changin later I get really upset as we go on this new NA$CAR made for the newbies.

I really like the way you're thinking. Jeff's 300+ point lead over second place would have equated to a 30+ point lead at the start of the chase. It's fair, but it still puts the rest of the field within striking distance.
I think that they should still reward more points for wins during the regular season and during the chase. But I don't think you need to give people another bonus for wins once the chase starts. They were already rewarded for their wins with points.....why reward them again? Just make winning the race worth more points to start with.
And drop it back down to 10 drivers. Why should almost 28% of the drivers make the playoffs? You can have a very mediocre year and still make the playoffs...which isn't right. The top 10 in points....and maybe a wildcard type slot for whoever has the most wins (and didn't make the top 10).

Don't no if 50 points is necessary. That being said in my opinion, NO WAY should any driver with a 300+ point lead going into the chase have to start the chase 20 points back of the "new leader". If it had been any driver besides Gordon, or possibly Johnson that lost a 300 point lead there would have been a cry so loud heaven would have trembled. Can anyone imagine the kind of outcry there would have been if Earnhardt, Burton, or Edwards had been 300 points up with 10 to go, only to go back 20 when the chase started???? Seriously, one of the France's would have been assassinated.

There is no quick fix for the abomination that they created. They need to go to a new points standing totally void of any resemblance to the Winston Cup era. They should have heat races for every race instead of qualifying. Shorter main events. Let me explain. If the race is now 500 miles, split the cars attemping to make the race into two groups (heat 1, & heat 2). Each heat be 125 miles, the top 20 from each heat going to the main. Then have a 250 mile main. Still a total of 500 miles for the veiwers and it would be more interesting. Now to the points issue, give the top 5 finishers in the heats points (10 for 1st and going down 2 per spot until 2 for 5th). Then give the the winner of the main 50 points going down 2 points per position until 2 for 25th. No points for finishing outside the top 25 in main. Do away with the chase. Trust me if you change the format, the chase won't be needed and your points won't be taken away from you.

The chase is working fine. I like it. There not changing it. It's not broke. Your plan does nothing for the wins but go's back to awarding for consistancy only.
They have talked about giving out some kind of season trophy for the leader after race 26 which Gordon would have won. That way guy's will race for the wins and the points instead of just racing to get into the chase.
This is why they give a million bucks to the 13th place finisher so people will still race for the win's even though there not in the chase.
They already are awarding more points for winning and seed 10 more points per win at the beginning of the chase.

Having some kind of equiviliant is a bit better than everyone starting equal (plus wins if you have them). Having everyone in the chase starting with 5,000 points, plus 10 for every win is kinda stupid.
If its 1 point for every 10 in front of the next guy, that would be good, and might encourage drivers, even points leaders, to drive more all out to get every advantage as possible. If you also want to add in 10 points for wins, that would be cool too.

I agree with your thought pattern here. Unfortunately, NASCAR wants the chase to be wide open. I find the current chase points spread to be appalling. Drivers like Jeff Gordon, who had a tremendous 26 races should be rewarded with more than a 5 or 10 point spread. They need to reward winning, that's what its suppose to be all about. Now all you have to do is win your races at the end of the season. Competition and fan base is taking a big hit. People want to see racing in its purest form, all out.
