My girlfriend has a tooth that needs a root canal badly, and her whole jaw is swollen badly, she can only open it a couple of finger's width it hurts so much. Her insurance is being an asshole and probably won't okay the Root Canal for 2-4 weeks. Her parents aren't in a very good financial situation, so they need their insurance to do it. If they tried to do a tooth pull they wouldn't be able to numb it enough...
I'm so worried about her... will she be able to wait that long?

Has anyone had a tooth pull without good numbing?

I just went through my first tooth ache and I would not wish it on my worst enemy. (well, maybe this one person) Anyway, She needs to go have this done. I took so many pain relievers and the one that worked best was Ibuprofin. There are many brands and I bought Walmarts Equate Ibuprofen Gels. I took 2 about every 2 hours when I was at work and when they quit working I took a couple of Excedrin Migraine pills. I am not normally a pill popper but I had to take this many. Then when I went to bed I took 2 Tylenol PM's. This happened for 3 days because my dentist is closed on Sat, Sun, and Monday's. Then I had it fixed on Tuesday. Then I detoxed.

To answer your question, no. First it sounds as if she might have an infection such as an abscess tooth and need antibiotics to clear the infection, then once the infection is gone she can have the tooth pull or if she wants to save the tooth, get a root canal. As far as the wait, she should have it taken care of as soon as possible. Check with the neighborhood clinics they might have advise on where she could go to have it done at little or no cost. Some clinics offer help for low income families.

Not without numbing, no. She shouldn't wait 2-4 weeks. There should be dental colleges near you that will pull a tooth for a reduced rate. I got one pulled one time and it was like $85 which is still a lot I guess, but it beats waiting and being in pain. That has got to be one of the worst kinds of pain! Also, call around and ask dentist offices what they'd charge and if they'd be willing to do a payment plan.

That would be inhumane in my opinion for a dentist to pull a tooth without numbing.

I've never had a tooth pulled without numbing, but I have had them taken out. Even with the painkillers, it was extremely unpleasant and hurt really badly afterwards. Please, don't make her go through that. I'm being faced with having to get my wisdom teeth taken out...but a root canal? While it may seem less major, my mom and sister have both had them done. They are very very painful.

It sounds like she may have an abscessed tooth and she will need to get on antibiotics for a week to get the infection down so the dentist can numb it. Until then, there is nothing that can be done.

Can she at least pay for a pain subscription? I had a tooth pulled while I was pregnant, they gave me tylenol3 which has codeine in it. I slept a lot. I had to wait a week to get it pulled. The tooth extraction without insurance was 80$. You should check dentist prices without insurance for extractions.
