My fiance's sister got married a year and a half ago, and, although I gave her lingerie at her bridal shower, my fiance (who was in the wedding) and I never got her a proper wedding gift. We were planning to do it shortly after the wedding, but never did, and it's been hanging over my head for a long time now. I would really like to get her a wedding gift now, but am not sure how to do it without seeming tacky. I am especially worried, now that I am engaged, that she will think I am only giving her a gift in order to get one from her next June.

I know I got myself into a bad situation etiquette-wise, but what is the best thing I can do to get out of it? (I am considering getting an expensive household item -- like a set of good kitchen knives -- to give to her at Christmas and explaining to her then that it is to make up for the wedding gift we didn't buy.)

Don't combine it with another gift. Just give her your gift with a sincere apology.
Sometime later you will be in a position to joke with her that she can hold off giving you a wedding gift until you have a couple of kids.

You just can't recoup from such an incredible faux pas. Too much time has passed. If she is a respectable person she has seen that you haven't the proper etiquette to do the right thing but will offer a gift at your wedding regardless. You cannot buy her off by offering a gift as a belated wedding gift. If you choose to buy them something extra nice for Christmas, it is a Christmas gift not a make-up gift. In the future, don't be so irresponsible and be more considerate of the occasion.

Dear ( fiance's sisters name and husband's name), Sorry this is so very late. We have been meaning to get this out to you forever... Love( your name and fiance's name)......(Amy Vanderbilt's Complete Book of Etiquette).....Do not combine a Christmas gift with a Wedding gift....Go to a better store, order those good kitchen knives and have the store mail them to their house, it might cost you a little more, but that is the price you'll have to pay for being so late with this matter. If the store won't mail them, you'll have to do it. Now, for Christmas you will buy them another gift, something completely different.

Take your sister somewhere nice and while you are there explain to her that you are sorry you didint give her a proper wedding gift. If the gift you wanted to give her is accsesible to bring then give it to her while you are where ever you took her. Or just surprise her.

My advice to you is to forget about the wedding gifts. After all you did give her the lingerie, that should count. What makes you think you need to give her more?
