Magical thinking. "Post hoc ergo proctor hoc". It happened a lot in tribal days, but we've come a long way in our understanding since then. Except for the fanatics, whose ability to learn stopped at their holy scripture.

Trying desperately to find a divine "why" behind earthquakes, droughts, and other natural disasters only makes them look superstitious and/or stupid.

Everything in the Old Testament concerning sinful acts have always been blamed on god. It's nothing different, they always have. Heaven knows there are plenty of natural disasters. It will never change as long as people believe the word of God is literal.

We live in a broken world, outside of the full protection of God, because Mankind has polluted itself with sin.

Therefore, calamities happen. They happen to all/any of us. How we respond is up to us.

I choose to respond with faith, and somehow I come out better from calamity.

Its their lack of understanding of God's nature and God's justice.
