At what height could one be dropped from a building, person I know lives in a high rise block and he regularly drops strays from like 4 or 5 floors up but says they always land and run away, he is now talking about moving up a few floors but to me, this sounds dangerous? What is the highest you have seen/known a cat to be dropped from and survive(with no broken bones)?

I will answer your question but first I have to say that your friend needs to be reported for animal cruelty - it is nothing short of torture to drop an animal from that height! Try and talk them out of it - and if you can't then be human and humane and report them yourself!

To answer your question cats are able to land on their feet only if they have sufficient time to turn over in the air. A cat that falls will rotate the front part of their body, and the hindquaters then follow. The rest of the time that the cat is in the air it is relaxing its body which helps it to absorb the impact from the eventual landing. A cat falling from a greater height has more time to realx, but it is still a great shock to the body to hit the ground at that velocity.

And no I did not drop a cat to discover this - I read a lot and have seen photographic sequences of a cat being dropped from a small height. If you do a google search you should be able to find examples as well.

First - your sadistic acquaintance should be reported to the police and to the nearest animal cruelty organization (HSA, SPCA). Cats do not always land on their feet. Even when the cat does land on its feet the landing itself can cause internal injuries and shattered bones. I had a cat who fell from just about 7-8 feet onto a concrete floor - his hip was shattered. The surgery was expensive but well worth the sacrifice of less important things. The vet removed all the bone pieces and then Singer's body created an artificial hip joint through scar tissue. After healing he was all good and very rarely even limped, living for many more years.

Well, obviously dropping a cat from a high rise is animal cruelty and your friend should see a psychiatrist for his problem. To answer your questions about whether cats always land on their feet and what height they can land without being hurt, I would say they instinctively land on their feet, so usually they will. I think the height that they can safely fall also depends on what surface they are landing on. I'm sure there is a big difference between landing on grass and landing on pavement.

I have seen a cat not land on it's feet after someone threw it...are you proud your friend is a animal abuser? Does he know the poor cats are well and not injured after falling 4-5 floors? Sure they may run off but that doesn't mean they don't have internal injuries or fractures.

There is a rotation for cats and it is based on their tails and their habitat during their evolution (sorry conservatives). There have been studies informed by histories of cat falls in urban areas. At the 7th floor, he will be murdering them. These strays he is dropping are being injured, just not killed in the fall. This is very cruel. This is the kind of activity that is a predecessor to torture and murder of people, according to studies of people. So your "friend" is in need of psychological evaluation. The special on cats was related to their moment of rotation in flight - just like the piece of bread that always lands butter-side down has to do with the moment of rotation for a slice of bread. This has been verified in a drop lab where the cats were held on a jet of air - no cats were hurt in the tests. He is not "learning" anything. He is just injuring cats who need to be taken to the shelter and neutered and released or euthanized. I also highly doubt he is dropping strays, he is trapping someone's housecat and maiming it for his own amusement. Do not entertain his fantasy, he is exhibiting psychopathic behavior. Your "friend" needs help now and he needs to be barred from any contact with cats.

Regardless of whether cats always land on thier feet or not (which I'm sure happens on occassion, but they can still hurt themselves or worse), I would be reporting this person. Throwing cats out of any height is utterly cruel, it makes no difference if they are stray or not.

How would this person like to be thrown out of a high window just to see whether they landed on thier feet or not? Bet they wouldn't like it very much.

This person is sick and is committing a crime. Cruelty to animals. He should be reported. No, it is not true that cats always land on their feet. Because they can twist and turn their torsos some people believe this to be fact. Falling from this distance could injure the legs and spine even if the cat landed on his feet.
I hope you don't call this idiot a friend.

I think this is a myth.....they can turn thier bodies around from a short distance of 5 or 6 feet but to think a cat would be safe from a 6 story drop is stupid

By the way , I'm no cat lover but I would love to drop up to your friends apartment sometimes to discuss my theory on "do idiots that are cruel to animals land on their feet when dropped froma 7th story window"

I don't think it's true. I think it is just meant to express that cats are very agile. I've seen my cats be rather clumsy, though...trying to make a jump, overestimating their talents, sliding clumsily to the floor, etc.

I think the person you know who drops them from a building needs to be reported and needs to get a new hobby. It is not unusual for burgeoning serial killers to start out by torturing small animals.
