My favorite is the food my family makes. Some of it, I won't eat. Some of it I take home with leftovers. Yummm...

Family getting together and actually getting along would be wonderful too.

What is your favorite food?

Also, what can diabetics eat when they are on a 1800 calorie diet with no sugars or sweets and cannot eat salt because of the high blood pressure medicine they are on?

Thank you all for your answers. About the diabetic thing. It is my brother who just got out of the hospital and the doctor said NO sweets or sugar. He is on a pill for his diabetes. He use to eat 2 or 3 helpings at a time. I pray he can control himself and take better care of himself. I am bringing veggie tray, fruit, and trying a sweet potato casserole. Thank you for your tips.

I love to cook for lots of people -- so, my favorite part of Thanksgiving is COOKING. My family is kind of scattered and married so we don't always get together for Thanksgiving -- so I have "orphans" over to my home. We spend the day, share each others special dishes, relax and visit. Diabetics can still eat the traditional turkey with stuffing and/or ham. turkey is pretty low calorie. And of course, veggie side dishes (green bean casserole) and salad. There are special aisles in most grocery stores that help with diabetic desserts. There are also bakeries that carry diabetic desserts. 1800 calories a day isn't bad at all -- especially if you are talking about a woman. And for Thanksgiving, most people take some liberties with their diets and go back to being strict the day after.

With the newer types of insulin these days, diabetic diets aren't necessarily as restrictive as they used to be. Read here https://tr.im/Oczqa
As with any medicine or diet change, you should discuss it with your doctor. Fruits, both fresh and dried, have a natural sugar in them that will raise blood sugar levels, so be careful about eating too much. Not sure about the nuts. Moderation is always the key. I've been diabetic for 18 years and just recently changed insulin types. I love it because it gives me more freedom in when and what I eat.

Ok, I nurse and on the holidays, we let our patients eat and drink anything they want for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Usually we end up giving extra doses of Lasix and probably some extra insulin here and there, but you gotta live and thats what life is all about. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!
