I live in the UK
The job interview is a 200 mile round trip
the Employer is a Government agency
i am a student with little income

A simple no .... It will send up a HUGE red flag that you may be trouble later ...If I were the interviewer I would turn you down flat for suggesting such a idea.

If they had not suggested it up front, it would not be a good idea to ask if you really want the job. If you feel the job is one you really want and therefore the trip and expense is worth it to you then go. But you won't get the job if you ask up front when they didn't offer. If you cannot afford the trip and the job isn't important enough to you, turn down the interview.

Well you can ask, it should not hurt your chances since it is a government agency. I would explain that you are extremely interested in the job and were wondering if it was possible for them to cover a portion of the travel expenses for getting to the interview.

I don't think that would impress your potential too much, and if they have a large selection to choose from I think they would select someone who didn't ask for a reimbursement for travel.

But you would be fine in asking after you have been hired.
