There are three absolutes in fishing with a hook. The fisher, the lure/bait, and location. The rod is merely an extension... handlines, sticks, trotlines, etc, and thus are not necessary to the sport. Lure is important, but MOST IMPORTANT is location. I don't care what rod and reel combo with what bait or lure or how good you as a fisherperson are, if the fish aren't THERE they can't bite anything you throw in the water. Find the right spot and the right fish, though and you can use bubblegum to catch them. I saw something once that had a little list of offbeat things people had caught redfish on... I forget specifics, but one of them was a batman action figure...

Right now the popular lure for Surf fishing in general, including Halibut is the Lucky Craft. This is what I'm hearing from my customers, in So. CA.

I've never heard of anyone catching halibut from shore. And certainly not on a minnow imitator like a Rapala or Lucky Craft.

Just from my experience, if I was surf fishing for Hali, I would use octopus or herring. My first choice would be octopus though. 40yr exp Northwest Pacific Guide

www.trixjettyworm.com a lot of halis are caught on those, they're made by a san diego local and the price is pretty reasonable.
