There have been people up in my area who have been getting engaged for YEARS. I know at least 4 women between 20 and 24 who have been engaged for at least 3 years.

What is your opinion on this? Is it a fad? Do you think couples like this have a chance? What is the purpose of having such a long engagement?

You say to live together... but I lived with my ex for over a year and we decided it wouldn't work and ended it. We were never engaged though, we were just living together in a common-law way...

I think these long engagements are a mistake on the part of the girl. In my experience, most couples who are engaged for years never get married because the reason for the long engagement was the guy never wanted to get married in the first place, and being engaged pacified the girl and legitimized the relationship in her eyes. In the end, she ends up feeling hurt and used and taken advantage of and is forced to move on, after spending several years thinking she was with the man she'd one day spend her whole life with. Bottom line, get engaged and then immediately set a date and plan a wedding, or don't get engaged at all.

To me, 3 years is far too long for an engagement. I can understand 3 years dating but when a guy asks a girl to marry him, waiting 3 years is crazy.

One reason that the engagement might be 3 years long is if the couple are living together. Then there is no rush to get married because at that point it's simply a piece of paper.

If a couple makes it to the two year mark in their engagement, they will probably never get married.

I don't think there is anything wrong with this, especially if those girls are going to school, and finishing when they are twenty two or three...people often want to get settled in their career or at least finished school before they get married and start a family.
