Can't go wrong at B&H

Under $500 if you live outside NY (as there is no sale tax when it is shipped outside the state).

Don't try to save a few bucks (even if that is a lot) by getting from some odd places. It's not worth the trouble.

Just BE CAREFUL if you find a price for the camera and lens that is too much below $500. Be sure that everything is there, like battery, charger, cables, software, strap, lens...

Check out the listing at B&H Photo, because they are an honest vendor who sells the proper kit. If you don't want to buy it from B&H, write down the list of the items included in the kit and make sure you are getting everything from someone else before you think you are getting a really great price. B&H also has used D40's in stock for $419 with the lens.

Click on the "Item Includes" tab and you will see:

• 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens with Front & Rear Lens Caps
• Front & Rear Lens Caps
• EN-EL9 Rechargeable Lithium-ion Battery
• MH-23 Quick Charger
• UC-E4 USB Cable
• Camera Strap
• BF-1A Body Cap
• DK-5 Eyepiece Cap
• BS-1 Accessory Shoe Cap
• DK-16 Rubber Eyecup
• PictureProject Software CD-ROM
• User Manual
• 1-Year Nikon U.S.A. Limited Warranty

(As long as I can copy and paste, I figured I may as well put the list here for you.)

Go to Cnet.com and look it up. There will be a list of online merchants and you can sort them by price. There is also a rating of each merchant and if you select one with a high rating and lower price, you should be satisfied. B&H is a good retailer and I have purchased a great deal from them with never a problem, but they are rarely the lowest price, even among legitimate retailers.

I highly recommend Beach Camera. http://www.beachcamera.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=NKD401855

You can also try ePhotoCraft. They are local to me and have always been good to deal with. http://www.ephotocraft.com/items.asp?Cc=DIGSLR&shopBrand=&Page=2

For what it's worth - ePhotoCraft also lists a factory reconditioned version for about $80 less than new. Something worth considering...

Best of luck.

Also, here is a site you might like to read through. www.dpreview.com; lots of info on digital photography.

Check out Cameta Camera on Ebay. They sell demo cameras with 18-55mm lens for only $449.99.
