Get a medium size bike, and just a solid blue or red

The first place that I would look is internet bike shops:

www.evanscycles.co.uk
Pualscycles.co.uk

etc.

This will give you an idea of what is out there. Ideally, I would look at spending about £200-£300 on a goodie.

However, 24" I would look at Specialized or Scott (Scott do a mini version of their Scale and their Spark (Full sus race, yum).

However, stick with brands that have a good rep, Trek, Scott, etc. Next, if it has gears, etc. Buy from a shop, unless you are an experienced mechanic and know how to set up a bike.

Also, get branded components (SRAM, Shimano etc.)

I would also look at Dawes as a manufacturer. I bought a Blowfish for my 5 year old and was very impressed.

Luck

Please -- don't go to Wal-Mart, Target, Toys R Us etc. A bike from there usually won't last a season in the hands of a normal hard riding 13 yr old. Give some more specifics to what your price range is, and what kind of riding the 13 yr old wants to do.

Try performancebike.com.

For a 13 year old, a mountain bike is probably what he'd prefer.

As noted by others, it's a waste to go top end, because he'll outgrow it, but I'd still spend $500-600 and get him one that's worth riding. That's what I did for my kid 10 years ago. It only lasted a couple years, he ripped the derailleur off on a tree stump while singletracking. Just as well, it was too small by then anyway. He saved his money and bought a better bike that he's still riding.

Ironhorse has some decent machines in that range.

Just remember, whatever you buy he will outgrow. I started off at about the same age (12, actually) and had a 48cm Panasonic. Does this date me? Anyways, I outgrew it and moved to a 51cm Bianchi. I put several thousands of miles on the Panasonic so it wasn't a waste or anything. If you're son intends on riding the bike to pieces then go all out. If it's for an occasional jaunt and he won't put more than 500 miles a year then that's another story. It's your wallet. Spend rationally.

that depends man im 13 years old and i have two $1500 bikes made by felt that are partially carbon fiber so it depends on your price range, gender, size, weight you need to be a lot more specific about your question asking but by what you have said go to walmart they have some affordable bikes that arent exactly complete crap
