This is typically what happens with DV; DV usually gets "wrapped" into a file with .avi format. The files are unchanged from the original recording, and the file sizes run at roughly 13 GB an hour. This is perfectly normal, and it's a good thing. I don't want my video compressed for DVD until I'm finished with it.
When you're done with any editing you might want to do, you're ready to start the DVD authoring process.
You will have to use a program that can "author" DVDs. It will compress and convert your video to MPEG-2 for DVD, AND they will put the files in a format that can be read by DVD players. NOTE: Simply taking an MPEG-2 file and burning it onto a DVD will NOT work if you try to put it into your set-top DVD player.
Ulead VideoStudio is one program I often recommend for this. It's entry-level software that should do the job for most people working with home video, and it authors DVDs.
Any other questions? Ask away!

Simple:
Open Windows Movie Maker and import the AVI into it. Then drag the clip(s) into the timeline and save it as a movie. While you are at it... try adding captions, credits and background music, etc. to your movie.
Save the whole thing as a movie file then use your DVD software to put it on a disk.
NOTE: With Windows Media Center edition, you can go direct to DVD from Movie Maker.
