It started back during slavery. ***** was was the overall black race. ***** means black. Slave Masters, overseers & etc would use the word "******" to make the slaves feel inferior toward themselves (which they did) and some still do in this day and age. The word "******" was used as a curse word to slaves (a hate word) a degrading word. When slavery was abolished, ex-slaves felt that "******" should have also been abolished. But the word was continued to be used by ex-slave masters / owners as an insult for the hatred they felt against the former slaves. The "N" word was passed on thru the generations til now. When the white race or any other race that don't have any respect for the Black race, will let the "N " word come out. The purpose of the "N" word from the white race is for insult / hatred /disrespect /degrading and etc. For the Black race of people, it's a reminder of the blood , sweat, and tears, the beatings, the hangings & etc that their forefathers went thru. The Black race use the "N" word among themselves as something sweet "my *****". Other races misinterpret the use of the use of the "N" word among Black people. They feel that they can use it also (usually causes a conflict). Oh yeah, the word "Cracker" was started by slaves, (short for "Whip Cracker"). That make some races happy to be called that.

I would be offended even though it is supposed to be a term of endearment because I know the origin of the word. In Portuguese the word n-e-g-r-o meant black object. When the Atlantic Slave Trade started the Portuguese started to call the enslaved Africans n-e-g-r-o-s. In English people started to say n-i-g-g-e-r which meant the same thing only pronouced differently. In the 80s the term n-i-g-g-a started to be used as a greeting which means the same as n-i-g-g-e-r. So basically you are calling yourself a black object. Shocking isn't it.

Because you seem intelligent and educated. If something does not apply to you, then why would "you" be offended..get it...
I have alot of african american friends and personally I think that until people started drawing "LINES" there was "less" predjudices. So what I mean is this, there are slang terms for blacks and I would think if you act "ghetto" you can be called "*****" and if you act like white trash there are terms for that as well. We also like I said draw so man lines as in if you live in America and are an AMERICAN you are an AMERICAN how about that folks, no more of this bs "African American, Irish American, etc. bs thats the problem in a nutshell it draws wedges between races.
I think more black people are racist against whites then the other way around.

You should be offended, it's not just making fun of your skin color, it's calling you a vile name that has been used for a long time to put people with brown skin into a different catagory then those with white skin. If someone calls you that it's like taking a step backward for you and black people in general.
I hate that word, and I hate what it represents, regardless of who is using it.

The word N-i-g-g-a is derived from the word n-i-g-g-e-r. This word holds a strong negative connotation and is hugely offensive to many people and especially to the black community. Even the word "cracker" if you know the history behind it you will learn is hugely offensive to both a white person and even to a black person. I encourage you to visit Wikipedia and Dictionary.com to learn more about the word "n-i-g-g-e-r". If you are a young black woman you own it to yourself. This is not a word to take lightly. This word was created to hurt, humiliate and supress. It has never been an acceptable word and will never be.
Good Luck.

The reason it's such a big deal is because it's still considered a racial slur or even derogatory. I don't allow anyone to call me that, I find it rude.

The "N" word is a derivative of *****, then Negra because of Southern laziness in speech. From Negra the descriptive turned in to the infamous "N" word.
I detest hearing someone say the word and reference blacks in such a derogatory manner. Ignorance and prejudice is ripe everywhere one goes. My wife and I are adamant that the word is never uttered in our house.
As for "cracker?" It amuses me.

Some people feel that the word "n-igga" is actually a word of greeting or a word that shows friendship..."wassup my ***-ga" "That's my ***-ga" . At the same time though its meaning is something like "a stupid person"... "Ni-gga" is derived from the word "***-ger" which is why many blacks feel offended by it when a person of another race refers to them as it.....But what do I know I'm only 15...
LMAO I just had to go back and modify c/ they don't allow the word n****.......I was wondering why you typed it like that

The full word means ignorant. People take out the "er" and feel that it desensitizes the word, making it okay to use. The word has two many double standards, it's okay for certain people to use it as frequently as they please, but if other people use it there condemned. It should be not used out of context.

I've checked it on wikipedia:
Earlier variants (such as neger or negar) derive from the Spanish/Portuguese word *****, meaning "black", and probably also the French nègre, which has also been used pejoratively (but also positively as in Négritude), derived from ***** (the ordinary French word for "black" being noir). Both ***** and noir (and therefore also nègre and ******) ultimately come from nigrum, the accusative form of the Latin word niger, meaning "black".
