Yes it is possible to use regular margarine BUT the crust will not turn out as well. The best crusts are light and flaky and do better when using lard or cold butter (solid not whipped). There is also a receipe for crust made with oil that turns out fairly well. I find that the ones frozen in the store work quite well also and the Pillsbury refrigerated ones are good also

If the vegan margarine is in the same texture then it should be okay but if it very watery and unlike butter then I would say no. If I sound ignorant, I am sorry but I just have never heard of vegan margarine before.

I used margarine for my pie crust for the first time, and it turned out tough as nails. I was careful when preparing the dough, and used ice water, and rolled it out quickly, being careful not to roll it out twice. Was so tough you couldn't chew it.

I say yes. I mean, a lot of people use Crisco, and that's close to margarine. If it's in a tub, just take out as much as you need and chop it into bits before you cut it in with the flour.

yes I'm presuming your making a fruit pie and not a savory pie if so short breads basic formula is 3-2-1 3being parts flour 2 being parts sugar 1being fats marg doesn't reconstitute as well so you will need to increase the flour by about 5%

Yes and in fact it's a little more forgiving than butter. Margarine is basically shortening and salt. So, your substitution is one to one.

My Mom and Grandmother were great bakers and both baked for an all homemade goods, bakery shop.

They only used margarine in their pies and they were just the flakiest....I wish I could do as well.

I was told, to make them flaky...it was all in the handling of the dough....do not over handle it.

Incidentally,my Grandmother won 1st. place in a Robin Hood bake off contest. I so proudly, now, have her trophies.

You can, however the pie crust won't be as flaky, butter adds better texture and flavor...and if you fear that butter will make it too delicate, add a couple of Tbs of ice cold vodka to your mix...trust me, you won't taste it, and it makes the dough stronger.

Yes.

You can substitute margarine for butter, in any recipe.

Will depend on the context really. Which is better as a snack - fresh fruit to me. It's tastier and gives you that little of sweetness. Which can be better as a snack if you are trying hard to slice back on sugar and lose weight vegetables
