I believe in a greater power. Not necessaily the Christian God or the Muslim god or Hindu gods etc. etc., just a higher power.

I started to think about it, and I was Christian but how did I know i was following the right religion? I mean, the only reason so many Americans are Christians is because they are brought up with everyone around them worshiping God and telling them God and Jesus are real. I mean ever since I was 3 in preschool the thought of worshiping and believeing in God was pounded into my head every day.

For the same reason, thats why all of China is athiest.
And almost all of India is Hindu.

If you grew up where everyone around you told you that the Ancient Egyptian gods were real , then everyone would be worshiping them too.

So I came to the conclusion that so many Americans believe in God because they are in a sense brainwashed.
I believe in a higher power but nothing more specfic than that. What religion am I?

My mistake on my China and India statements to those of you who have commented on that, however I still stand by my point that you are greatly religiously influenced by what everyone around you is doing.

I hereby crown you a Deist.
Deist- The belief, based solely on reason, in a God who created the universe and then abandoned it, assuming no control over life, exerting no influence on natural phenomena, and giving no supernatural revelation.

Hey Bro, God talked about you and He knows you by name.

Acts 17:23: For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.
24: God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
25: Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
26: And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;
27: That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

You see, God sees you searching heart and has provided all of your answers that we can't give you here. Jesus is the higher power you speak of! Talk to Him today!

I think that it is great that you don't need organized religion to believe in God. That is probably better, because sometimes organized religion leads to things like holy wars, but if you were quietly worshiping how you like and not trying to force people to be like you the world would be better. sigh.

you can call yourself religious, pray, truly try and do what's right, dont hurt people and give what you can to people that need help and you dont have to figure out what church to go to.

Pantheist.

BTW, much of China is *not* atheist. Have you heard of Taoism? And there are many Christians in China, too.
