They probably had a bigger problem with his quote "I love your Christ, but I do not love your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ."

Actually, the way the Christians use the reference is incorrect. Even Ghandi didn't get it right, much as I respect him. In Jewish law, if you cause someone damage, then you must pay him for that damage. It's money, not another eye, that is demanded, and the price of "an eye for [the loss of] an eye" is what is considered fair. It's not that different from a judgment against someone who causes injury to a person today; you're going to end up paying someone a lot more if you cost them an eye than if you only cost them a tooth!

I SURE wish people would learn the Torah; they miss so much by not understanding it, and sometimes they sound just a little foolish to boot. But... that's for God to decide, and not me.

Shalom.

Ghandi is a hero, not a figure to incite rage. I don't see what's contrary? The eye for an eye was a principle of justice meant to limit the amount of punishment that could be exacted upon a wrong-doer. Obviously as a mere principle of justice it falls short of the higher law of Love, which was Christ's point in the Sermon on the Mount.

Peace to you.

Enraged? Upset? Not at all. The saying is absolutely compatible with Jesus's teaching.

First of all, "an eye for an eye" was an ancient law, that was initially intended to limit vengeance, so that the punishment would be proportionate to the offense. Centuries thereafter, Jesus tought (Sermon of the Mount):

"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth. But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you."
Matthew 5:38-42 (N.I.V.)

sry im not christian but i still think i can answer your queston. well no ghandi is not goin to hell cuz tht would mean everyone who is not christain will go to hell if there is really hell. people believe there is a hell because people want an answer to everything so they make an answer for when they die, if they do something bad they go to hell and if they do something good they go to heaven. this made life much nicer to live and also harder at the same time. really every religion is all the same but put in differant description or perspective.

Peace, love, understanding are wonderful concepts but their counterparts hate, lies, retribution are also part of this world and due their share of respect & value! I am sure if someone broke into your living area killing and raping all those you loved retribution would be demanded, forget that forgive and forget B.S. the new age christians/Ghandi keep shouting about they are but sheep, or what some refer to as easy kills.

Ghandi makes Christians mad? That's suprising since he actually had a lot of things to say that were very similar to JC.

No. I don't subscribe to everything the man believed and taught but have found many of his teachings to be compatible with, not contrary to, Christianity. I have great respect for his legacy and wisdom. A great man.

I do, however, have a problem with your enjoyment at "firing up" Christians. It's petty and childish...and frankly, rather sad.

You really should be directing this question to Jewish people since it's from the Hebrew Bible. As for us, Jesus said, "You have heard it said...but I say unto you, forgive..." Ghandi read the New Testament, and while he was justifiably quite disappointed in Jesus' followers and their racist behavior, from everything I read, he admired Jesus' teachings.

why would ghandi enrage me? after all, it was Christ who taught us to move past 'an eye for an eye'...it sounds like ghandi was expounding on what Christ taught! you DO understand that Christianity is based on Christ and His teachings, don't you? and you DO know that the covenant between Christ and Christians is a covenant of grace, not of mosaic law and the customs of ancient israel, dont you?

I feel sorry for Gandhi because he rejected Christianity based upon his view of Christians rather than accepting Jesus as his Savior. Now he has to stand before God clothed in the filthy rags of his own self righteousness instead of the righteousness that comes by faith in the sacrifice that God provided.

Perhaps you think Gandhi was a great and good man, and perhaps by humans standards he was. But according to God's standards everyone has broken his laws at some time in their life and if they haven't accepted the payment God provided then they will stand before God guilty and condemned just like a person who lived a good life but broke only one law would stand guilty before a human judge.
