In my department the academy was 6 months, followed by 4 months field training.
As for becoming a Special victims/sex crimes cop...maybe on "Law & Order" My department is one of the biggest in the state, and its the beat officer who runs with 99% of the calls he's dispatched to, including sex assaults. The detectives only usually get involved to "clean up" the file, chase up statements and present the case file to the DA's office. Of the 8 sex assaults I've investigated this year, investigations were only called out once.

Every agency is different, some take 6 months or more to complete, some less.
As far as special victims or sex crimes, that is a highly specialized type of position. You will have to do your time as a patrol officer and may even have to work the jail (sheriff's dept). Then, if you are lucky, be selected as a detective (minimum of about 5 years). After gaining experience as a detective, then you may be placed into a specialized unit. However, not all agencies have detectives that specialize in the areas you mentioned. So, we are talking about getting about 10 years in a police department, then maybe you might get an assingment there, if your agency even has that type of unit. Just to let you know, it's nothing like Law and Order. They never show the piles of paperwork and hours of administive details that the job ACTUALLY entails.

Both JTW and bear are telling you the straight on this. When I started in Illinois, the academy was 6 weeks. Last I knew it was 14.
I don't know of any place that lets people start in something like sex crimes. You usually have to have some street time and become a detective. Did some of this myself but it was 5 years after I was in uniform. Unfortunately TV makes it seem like there are always brand new people just coming on the department and doing those cases.
Possibly a Narcotics squad may take newbies onto the job but it is only after the academy, psyche testing, evaluations and going through the department FTO program.

It depends on the state that you live in but most police academies are at a minimum of three months.
Usually special victims/sex crimes are done by detectives. Again, depending on the agency you work for will depend on how fast you can be appointed to that unit. On average, you will have to do a minimum of 5 years as a beat cop before.

It depends on the State and city. Most officer have a college education and then they can either put themselves in teh academy or they get hired by a department who will put them through (this depends on the city and state). The academy can last anywhere from 16-26 weeks on average. Once an officer graduates, they are then put on a field training program (FTO) that can last 16-20 weeks. During the FTO training, an officer is normally evaluated on a daily basis and is trained on department policies and procedures.
In most depts, you have to do a few years on the street as a patrolman before you can write for a detective position. The detective positions normally investigate the sexual crimes. There is also training and on going training for this. Prior to my current promotion I was a "sensitive crimes" detective for 5 years

Right now Georgia has an 11 week police academy. If you get hired on you go to the academy. once you go to the academy, you have a partner on the force that drives for a few weeks while you learn the routine. the for te next few weeks he rides partner while you drive and take calls. once you are good to go, you are on a probation peiod.

States vary from 6 weeks to 8 months. Try to get as much legal education before appling. Also you have to be a certian height, weight, body mass, and physically fit, there is an extensive drug test and background checks.
