depends on wear you go, a place like sears is much cheaper, but are not always as good. If you have a private photographer they will charge you 10 times more then they should. I used to work at JC Penny Photo studio, part of the training we got were pregnancy photos. Portraits by Reg rents out the space inside the store, so you usually get a god photographer. If thats the way you are going to go then try and schedule your appointment mid day (less appointments) or on black Friday (no one comes in on that day).
With JCP you can get some great bundles from $30 up. if you want just regular photos (w/o any special effects) go to the JCP website and get a coupon that will reduce the price of a sheet from $10 to $5.

I am a professional photographer in the Bay Area California, and if the guy asked how much you are looking to spend he isnt a professional. I think anywhere around 150 would be a decent price, but make sure that he gives you the pictures on disk, so that you can print them whenever youo want instead of going to him for more money. You have to remember that like any other job time is money. Not only does the photographer have to take the pictures, but they also do a lot of post processing on the computer and if youwant them to print thats more time. With all that said, I would do it for 150!

You should expect to pay no more than for normal portraits.

However it may be that a time factor would enter the equation.

What are the portrait photographers in your area charging?

Do you want photographs taken at different times of day and / or spread out over several months, if so your photographer will need to visit several times.

This would increase the cost.

You need a very sensitive photographer. If I had a partner in your position I would expect that we sat down with the photographer and listened to his or her ideas.
A male photographer would have to appear very good to get the job.

As a retired photographer I can see great scope for creativity in such a commission. Such a commission I would want.

I would negotiate hard to get the shoot.

I would give a bit to get the shoot.

Remember that!

Find someone who wants it badly enough.

Hope you get what you want

Prices vary in different areas of the country, so this is a difficult question to answer, but the photographer did not sound very professional in asking that question. Figure out what you can afford and find a photographer whose work you can view and appeals to you. If his prices are too high, THEN tell him what you are looking to invest.

I'd say don't over do it. You know what money you have available for something like this but trust me on this - you'll want to have a lot more good images of the baby once it is out of the box so to speak so save your money for then.
