One male is 12 months old and the other is 6 months old. Neither has been fixed at this time. The little one is using my couch cushion as a litter box. I have had cats for years and never had this problem. They use the litter box most of the time and I keep it cleaned out. Are they trying to be territorial? Neutering will be in 3 weeks. Will this make them stop? Thanks in advance.

Possibly territorial, if it's urine,.. if pooing then something else.
Also "fixiing" will possibly stop this behavior, it will mellow them out.
Keep both of them confined in a smaller room with litter box(es) and food AFTER neutering them for awhile ,.. to re-condition them.
Hope this helps.

Yes, it's absolutely territorial behavior. But to be on the safe side- follow the "1 litter box per cat + 1" rule, which means you should have 3 available and clean at all times. When the little cat makes a mistake, take a paper towel and clean up as much as you can, then put the paper towel in the litter box. Show the kitten the paper towel, show him how to scratch and make sure he smells it.
It would be helpful to keep an eye on the older cat so he's not intimidating the little one. Make sure he's not hogging the food dish, toys, "favorite" spots, or your attention.
Neutering will help, but it's not magic and the behavior may continue. Just be persistent and patient.

Get them checked for a urinary tract infection first.
How many litter trays do you have? If you have more than one cat you should have at least a litter tray for each of them. Make sure they are not too close to each other. Sometimes one cat stops the other cat from using the tray. Also you could try changing the litter in case they just don't like the brand you are using.
If they are spraying it should reduce some when they are neutered, but if they have started doing it they may not completely stop. It's best to get them fixed before they start spraying.

How many litterpans do you have for your 2 cats? Since the little one has already started using your couch cushion, he will continue to do it, til the smell is COMPLETELY GONE!! Go to your pet store and get some Simple Solutions and spray the area that he's soiled. If possible, cover it w/plastic to protect it (and hide any residual smell). For 2 cats, the IDEAL solution is 2 litterpans, + an extra one. Kittens are like children....they "go" soon after they eat, so watch him carefully, and try to get him into one of the litterpans BEFORE he has a chance to poop on your couch. Good luck.................

Firstly get them fixed as planned. Yes, it's the whole male thing, but also some bad litter habits you'll need to break, the longer they continue like this the harder it will be to break the habits.
Secondly, do get another litterbox, at least one for each.
