I am taking my boyfriend on a carriage ride in central park in new york city as a suprise. Do I call for reservation or just show up? And where do I go? And how many people per ride can fit in the carriage? And I saw somewhere that it is $34 for 20 minutes. Is that per person or just per ride? ANy information about the carriage rides in central park would be great. We are going in late December

And also, do I tip the person who is giving the rides? How much?

Yep, you can just show up.

Go by Tavern On The Green (Central Park West and West 66th Street) and you will see an area where the drivers are, readily accepting passengers. Or you can head towards Central Park South (between 5th & 6th Avenues) for a driver.

The cost is for the ride and not per person and I do believe you can ride two in a carriage. Yes, dress warmly although the driver does offer a blanket for the two of you to snuggle up with! My wife (when she was my fiancee) did this for me and it was definitely enjoyable!

The minimum tip for this type of service is $6, but if your driver is top notch (actually ours gave a bit of NYC history regarding the park and the are around it), then definitely give him a few more bucks.

I would try the area by Central Park South west of 5th Ave.

They do have carriages for 4 people.

You might try calling 311 and tell them what you want. They are NY info ctr.

Please don't do a horse carriage ride--the horses are treated horribly. They are walked on concrete for nine hours a day and in all sorts of weather conditions. Horses can easily become spooked and bolt, causing a danger to themselves and others. You can Google cruel horse carriage and find a whole host of articles and websites detailing the cruelty of this practice.
