hi there i have a 12 week old male kitten who is absolutely fab, very playful and before we got him he was brought up around other cats and a dog. we are thinking of getting him a playmate, however have not had kittens before and were just wondering if this was a good idea or not? if so would a male or female be better? is there a particular age you should introduce them? thank u

Two males would probably fight, unless you plan to get them neutered. But even then, I would go for male and female, in my experience as long as they are not able to reproduce, they get on much better. It all depends on the cat though really.
But yeah, it's definately a good idea to get him a playmate, and as he's only 12 weeks old, I would introduce them straightaway, and they should get along famously!

cats love the company of other cats i have got six. It would be better to get another kitten now while the one you have is still a kitten they bond a lot quicker when there so young, the older they are the more time it can take for them to accept each other, and then they will either be the best of mates or just tolerate one another, as for the sex i don't think it much matters a female might be nice. I have one male and five females,He was a stray and the last but one addition to the house, the vet put him at about 8 years, and he's great with the others always looking out for them,

At this age, either male or female will be fine. The sooner you do this, the more likely they are to play together "right off the bat"! You don't say how long you've had him, but since he's only 12 wks, it probably hasn't been very long. If you decide on a female, be SURE to get them both "fixed" as early as your vet will do it. Otherwise, the time could "fly by" and first thing you know...........kittens! So, it's really up to you which gender you get. Did this kitten have brothers AND sisters? Ask the person you got him from ... how he got along w/them. Did he prefer one over the other? Anyway...2 kittens playing in your livingroom will make your tv "obsolete". The kittens are MUCH more fun to watch!! Good luck.........................enjoy................

Why a female mate. Take chance, it could be gay too. I read about it that preference for same sex is not limited to human beings. It extends well into animals too. So both ur problem solves. Why be so cruel to an innocent animal. U can't neutralize it before it had first taste of sex. How can u be so selfish. Instead U can get a female puppy for it as play mate. At least it'd have a female sex as companion besides u off course. Had I been ur kitten, I'd have demanded at least this much of favor from U.

Getting another kitten while yours is so young and barely left its' mum and siblings, will be fine!
It won't matter which sex if you are getting them neutered. There won't be any problems between them before they are sexually mature, and probably not any after, bar the mating side, if you had a female!
I've had 5 cats at once, 3 females (one was a rescue cat, about 6 months old, and we had her for a few months, building her up as she was emaciated, before rehoming her)and 2 males, and they al get on fine!
I hope this helps!

I'd bet your little one would love a new playmate. ASAP. The younger they are, the easier they adapt. I'd try for one about the same age, gender doesn't matter. Expect them to be quite naughty as they go through the juvenile delinquent stage, but you will find the pair of them so amusing. I volunteer for Cats' Protection, and babies do miss their siblings, either when they go to a new home, or are the only one left in care.

Try to get another kitten the same age. That way you can get them fixed at the same time.
I don't think that it matters if it is male or female. I have 3 adult males (ages 7,5, 6) 1 female (2) and four kittens, 3 males and 1 female (same litter, 11 weeks old).
They all get along great!

Earlier the better for sure!!!
Either gender should be good. I have had better luck with male/male kittens since they tend to go with the alpha thing pretty quickly, there tend to be less fights. I recently tried a female/female and ended up giving one of them to my mom. Just make sure you let them do the introducing! Don't push them on eachother, let them take their time sniffing and such. Also, get them fixed as soon as your vet will do it since male cats are very good at marking EVERYTHING in site!!!

My family just got a 3 or 4 month old kitten a month ago. There will probably be hissing until they get used to each other. Try to make sure that they r able to get used to each other before u start to make them be friends. It will probably work.So go for it. Get them nuetered before they start peeing on things that they think should be there's

Cats and kittens love to have companions. They wont feel unwanted. They may have a little jealousy at first, but that would soon die down. At first they mean seem grouchy with one another, but you will soon learn that they will become the best of friends!
