Wanting to buy dad an HDTV plasma or LCD TV for Christmas. He wants to start getting into blu ray disc as well. The salesman at best buy told my mom she has to get a "1080p" HDTV in order to play blu ray. Is that true or was he just trying to make a larger sale? I want to know if we can buy a less expensive "720p" HDTV and still use it for blu ray...

Thanks for any help!!

My family is watching "Rattouie" on BlueRay on my 720 television as I type this.

HD SERVICE

You want to upgrade your CATV or SAT service to HD. Order now because so many people are getting these - I suspect the backlog to run 2 months or more after Christmass.

On BluRay players:

Look at a PlayStation 3. It is one of the best BluRay player available for only about $50-75 more than a dedicated unit.

HDMI Cables:

The salesman will try to sell you a $100 HDMI cable (and make $50 for the store). Order a HDMI cable from BlueJeans or MonoPrice. These cables carry a digital signal so they are very insensitive to needing a 'high end' cable.

PLASMA VS LCD

Plasma's are sexy because they hang on the wall. But they tend to be glass (heavy & expensive), need a $200 wall-bracket and perhaps professional installation.

LCD's can be hung on a wall, or stand alone. They tend to be lighter and cheaper and available in larger sizes.
