i recently tried to make my favourite, potatoes and turnip mashed together... and my dad said to use the turnip his friend gave him from his garden. When i chopped it up and boiled the "turnip", it wasn't orange, it was white. Then, when i mashed it up, it had the same texture as saurkraut. My dad is convinced it is turnip, but i almost threw up. it looked like a turnip (with soem purple and same core like thingy on top), and looked exactly like a turnip except it didn't have the wax that grocery stores put on it. What was this mysterious plant?! Was is sauerkraut?

spare me the.. "you didn't spell this right crap", cause i dont care.

You were expecting a Rutabaga, not turnip. Rutabagas are sometimes called "yellow turnip" or Swedes. And are commonly waxed at the supermarket.
EditSee two references to parsnips here. They are white and shaped like carrots. Turnips are typically, almost always round or heart shaped. White with purple shoulders. Raw are much like a radish, mild to "hot" . Cooked generally get sweeter and are good in stews and soups. Raw make a good pickle and are good grated as a relish with meat.
I have never seen a turnip that could described as looking like a white carrot.

that was definitely not sauerkraut, it might have been just a different kind of turnip, one that is really bitter. I have bought it before, but sauerkraut is cabbage thinly sliced and cooked with vinegar, and later pickled....you may have just gotten a different turnip....good luck!

sauerkraut is cabbage that has been pickled. it's German

oops sorry i didn't understand the question... it sounds like it was turnips( i think they come in different colours after all) but if it's definitely not turnip, maybe it's a parsnip because they're white

fermented shredded cabbage.
Use to make them in big crocks in the basement & have to occassionally stir it as it ferments.

Turnips are shaped like a carrot and is white.
Rhutabegas are roundish & are orangish.
