Jesus was killed by the religious leaders manipulating politicians. Pilate wanted to free Jesus if you read your bible you would know that basic fact, but the Jews said Pilate was a traitor because Jesus claimed to be king and that would have caused Pilate to be beheaded, so he had no choice but to crucify Christ on the Jews demanding. Why do you think Pilat washed his hands?

One, if Jesus was killed by anyone, He was killed by hypocritical Jewish religious leaders who resented his teachings (and used the government to do it). After all, Pilot did try to give Jesus an out. Second, even if he was killed by politicians, why wouldn't his followers want to prevent the same from happening to another innocent? Third, by being involved in government and politics, religious leaders can ensure a more ethical and Godly government (indirect form of witnessing/combating Satan). And yes, some do abuse their political power, but there are so many more we don't hear about who actually do the right thing. And yes, even helping a Christian decide which politician to support counts as being involved in politics.

They are trying to gain favor with the candidates, so that if they are elected the religious leaders will have some leverage to get laws passed that are beneficial to them.

Christian religious leaders are not allowed to talk about politics in church or they lose their tax exempt status.

True Christians are nutrual, and do not serve in wars or politics, however are under obligation to follow the laws of the land where there are no conflicts with bible principles.
