Bought a carpet for an irreguler shaped room, with an underlay that was actually more expensive than the carpet.

They left the large ofcuts from the carpet (which came in one piece) but took the remaining underlay which came in smaller rolls and hence can be used at their next job.

Should I return to the carpet shop and complain?

ok, it is a 7 meter by 3.5 meter room at it's biggest dimensions, though half the room is only 2.5 meters wide, leaving an area of 3.5 x 1 meter square as a cut off.

Fair enough, they could not sell a carpet that size, but by it's very nature they can use a 3.5 meter square piece of underlay at their next job, and if all jobs are equal, after 4 jobs (or 1 day) they have saved 14 square meters at £6.00 per square meter (or £84).

Feel I have been ripped of as they left the carpet remanents but not the underlay.

If your room is 7m x 3.5m (at its widest) you were likely as not sold a 7m x 4m carpet. Carpets are generally 4m wide in the UK, so you should have been sold 28 square metres of carpet. The waste pieces are useless to the shop (it's a pain to get rid of them believe me), and they are definitely your property.

As regards the underlay, it depends how much you were charged for. If they charged you for the 28 square metres then you ought to have had the balance of the underlay. Check your itemised bill for full details though.

It's very common for underlay to be more expensive than carpets, particularly if you have paid under £6 per metre for the carpet. There are tons of budget carpets, but not tons of budget underlays. Shops keep the prices of these carpets artificially low so they can upsell on underlay etc.

So find out exactly what you were charged for and take it from there. It's likely that they owe you a bit of underlay.

You pay for the carpet by the foot/meter in length by the width The shop can not sell the of cut. The underlay is sold by the amount needed to cover the area. It is in smaller rolls so there is less wast Carpet is approximately 12 ft wide
If you are happy with the job then there is no problem

If you bought the carpet and underlay as pieces, say 9'x14', you own the remains, both carpet and underlay. You were robbed. Yes, definitely complain and demand either the remnants of underlay or an adjustment in your bill or restitution if the bill is already paid.

If you just contracted for carpet, underlay and installation of that room, then as long as the job was done well, underlay, carpet, and finish details, you have no complaints, the carpet remnants were a bonus. Or you could complain that they left their "trash" (the carpet remnants) behind, not that you were cheated because they didn't leave the underlay as well.

If you paid for the underlay then I guess that its your underlay and you have every right to it. Go get it back from the cheeky gits.

yes ,unless you were charged just for the amount of underlay used, the `off `cuts are yours ask for it to be returned or a cash back solution
the amount used /paid for should be on invoice

It's customary for installers to remove "bigger pieces" of discarded material as a courtesy to the home owner to save them from filling their household waste barrel.

If you feel like you just "have to have it back" you can try to call the company but chances are the installer has already discarded your waste in their commercial waste receptacle.

Of course I would complain... especially since it was more expensive than the carpet.

I dont think so..you only paid for enough to cover the square footage of your floor.

more details needed-size, type, cost of carpet, time it took to fit. Did they have to move all your furniture out before they could begin?
