Beast's in the bible were always governments. Read:
Daniel 2:44 the images he saw were all animals and turned out to be governments. Which ended in our time.

Revelation 13: that speaks of one last beast before the end of the world. This wild beast represented all the governments that went before it. Out of the sea in the bible has always meant out of the sea of restless mankind.
For the first time in human history there was a governmental ruling power that represented all nations.
Everyone looked to it to solve the problems of the world.
It looked like the perfect solution. We need a world government so it would eliminate the need for war.
United Nations: Now it has no teeth, but God can change that. Read Revelation 17:17 Speaking of false religion a great city that has a kingdom over the kings of the earth.
God puts it into their hearts to turn on her.
First the UN trys desperately to make peace, the governments in frustration turns everything over to the UN>
Realizing they are in a quagmire that cannot be stopped.
Once the UN has the power it turns on religion and destroys her calling her Babylon the Great. The world empire of false religion. This plunges the world into the greatest tribulation the world has ever seen.
Matthew 24:21,22
In which only a very few persons survive to see the world a totally different place.

What, like the movie or something? Brian Flemming was supposed to have released his move called "The Beast" back on 6-6-06, but didn't make it. He has since renamed it "Danielle" and only the gods know when it's going to come out now.

As for the story in the book of Revelation, heavens-to-Betsy no! That symbological story/poetry was written for an audience in 1st or 2nd century Rome. The events that inspired that story are LONG gone, and the reign of Emperor Domitian has been over for a LONG time.

The thing is, the Apocalypse of John was written with the Judean struggle against Rome in mind. It was written some time after the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. The seven heads were the seven hills, and 666 was "Caeser Nero," who blamed his arson on the Christians when people started asking too many questions.

I have to admit, though I couldn't help thinking "Mark of the Beast" back in the 1980s when I started noticing a lot of fish on business signs, business cards, and personal checks.

"And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six." - Revelation 13:18.

Buying or selling, in a Spiritual sense point to the sending forth of the gospel:

"Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. 2 Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. 3 Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David." - Isaiah 55:1-3.

"And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.

6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine." - Revelation 6:5,6.

The mark of the beast 666 is a spiritual marking, highly spiritual stuff; it is the mark of all unbelievers; this goes back to the imagery of Zechariah:

"And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.

And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God." - Zechariah 13:8,9.

note:

third part (saved) 1/3 = .333
two parts (unsaved) 2/3 = .666

The mark of the beast is a spiritual mark that typifies all who are unsaved. They are the antichrists or "little beasts":

1 John 2:18 - Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

With all the things that are in place it could happen very quickly. The Bible says when the word is preached to all the world then the end will come. The Beast cannot be revealed until the Holy Spirit is taken out. Think when the iron curtain fell it fell very quickly I think that thinks could fall into place very quickly. Let us just be ready to meet him. God bless

Yes, you better put your order soon before they run out!

edit: That;s the craziest idea ever put in writing in the Bible... Who or what Government would want to do that? Business will hurt like Hell... Nowadays they don't know what to do for you to accept another credit card... you can buy without money!!! The idea of the 666 is for you not to buy or sell which is an impossible economy in our days... Nobody dreams about restricting your buying power so this idea of the 666 is a lot of BS good only in the days of the old Roman Empire...!!!

I don't plan on being on earth when that (666) does happen,
and it will if the Bible says so. The rapture will come first,
and I plan to be in heaven, before the Mark of the Beast
takes place.

Yahweh is right - it's the internet, the world wide web - "www" when written in roman numerals looks exactly like "666", the mark of the beast - one day "mark" my words - we will all need internet access to "buy and sell", just like the Bible predicted.
