The real answer is cost-cutting. But what part?

Backwards Compatibility for Playstation 2.

The Original 20gb and 60gb Playstation 3 have Full Backwards Compatibility for Playstation 2 Games because they feature a Full Hardware Emotion Engine + GPU (basically a mini-PS2) inside the PS3. This lets PS2 Games have 100% BC (Backwards Compatibility).

The 40gb and 80gb PS3 no longer have the PS2 hardware inside it. However the 80gb features Software Support (PS2 Emulation). This lets PS2 Games have about 90% BC.

Whatever the reason, Sony is cutting costs.

Because it has 2 chips from PS2:
1). Emotion Engine - CPU
2) Graphics Synthesizer - GPU
The main reason of 60GB disapperance is that each EE chip costs 27$ (without installation). People were constatnly complaining about the price. So Sony is manufacturing 80GB (it has only GS chip and no EE chip). 40GB has none of those chips - it's the cheapest version on the market.

I have been thinking the exact same thing. I can think of three possible answers:
1) They want the remaining stocks of 40gb ps3s to get sold.
2) They will be an updated model of the 60gb ps3, possibly with a dualshock wireless controller.
3) Both of the above.

they stoped making 60gb consoles to cut the cost. PS3 60gb is more expensive because of its full bc capabilty. The 80gb is software so it cheaper and they can sell it for a cheaper price. buy doing this it makeing the console cheaper and more people can buy it. Get 80gb though, i has and works on all my ps2 games and i dont think u buy Ps3 to play PS2 games. They got rid of 20gb model because they werent selling and introduces a 40gb model. 60gb model is the best one but it not bundeled with anything and is the game price as 80gb model. anyways get the 80gb but if u really want full bc 100% thats fine too. get the 60gb model then. 40gb doesnt have Bc and wont play Ps2 games but will play ps1 games.

sony have officially said that they have stopped making the 60gb because they dont want to manufacter 2 consoles in the EU (meaning they want to save money) and the 40gb has been selling faster than the 60. They have also said that they are not bothered about ps2 playback and that they are just focusing on the future.

It cost to much to make beacuse of the emotion chip which was the ps2's chip. The 80gb costs less to manufacture because it uses software emulation.

Cuz Sony found out it was underage...HA ....anyone? I think it's pretty funny...!.... I think cuz they saw that they could save money by removing BC (hardware replaced with software) but I think the 80s better cuz I don't have a PS2 so Its better for me.
