I couldn't find anything on the web describing this particular fear and its name. Here is a phobia list: http://www.phobialist.com/reverse.html#C-
I guess there are not enough people who suffer from this phobia for the experts to give it a name.
Let's call it alli-crocophobia.

I have a friend who has it severly agains snakes he is a cop!! But cant even look at a snake on tv. Some psychologists use treatments which actually make the patients look from a huge distance at what they fear gradually every day the picture is placed closer to the patient they eventually get familiar with it and the brain (hopefully) clicks that it is just a picture and irrational to be screaming and running away from it the patient basically has to come to the conclusion that they are afraid of something that cant touch them. Gradual exposure works for some people but not all your wife has to really want to face her fear and get over this. Plenty of support needed though cos to her it is a very real fear.

Just called crocodile phobia. Herpetophobia would be a phobia to all reptiles/amphibians (aka herps)
Avoidance will only enhance or prolong her phobia. The biggest step to treating people with any phobia is to know the fear is far greater than the actual threat you face.

I call them sane human beings, why on earth would a therapist think they had to teach a person not to be afraid of alligators, are those alligators going to teach school next year or work at the grocery?

A normal, sensible human being?
Sorry, I know you are referring to an extreme phobia but it just seemed to me reading your question that alligators are quite a good choice of something to be afraid of!
And a quick google search reveals that it is called... Herpetophobia

Some one who probably had a childhood scare that has carried in to adulthood, see if she can remember anything about it. the easiest thing to do is change channels.
A large gator is a very scary animal!
