Say I want to buy a PS3 60GB on craigslist and the seller shows the PS3 with a 60GB box but the actual console is a 80GB. How would you know while operating the system? Is there a serial number that matches the PS3 number on the system to the box it came in?

The model number for the unit is the last bit of the serial number on the back of the PS3 (mine, a UK 60GB, is CECHC03). It should be on the sticker on the box.

With the PS3 on, you can check the HD size by going into the settings then system settings part of the cross-media bar. It'll show something like 45/55GB (or 45GB out of 55GB free)
Note. It wont show 60GB or 80GB, as some is always taken by the operating system.

Functionally, though, other than PS2 backwards compatibility, there isn't any other difference.

iF YOU BOUGHT IT WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE BOX YOU CAN SEE WHAT MODEL IT IS BUY LOOKING AT IT. the 20gb model will have no chrome finish and maybe a chance of no HDMI input. the 40gb model will have only 2 usb ports compaired to 4 and the chrome finsh is not shiny. the 60gb model and 80gb look the same and is basically the same console just BC is differnt. but the 80gb model will come with a free game(motorstorm).

If it's not in it's box I wouldn't buy it. Save your money and get a new one. Don't risk it being stolen or someone modding it.
