My husband has a deep, secret flaw that I've recently unearthed, and I must learn how to retrain him. He's a tortie-phobe -- he irrationally thinks torties are evil because of their flecked fur and untrustworthy golden eyes. It's broken my heart that I'm married to a cat racist. He dotes on our domestic greys, and he adores just about every other kind of kitty (and they adore him as well), but somewhere, somehow, a tortie hurt him real bad, and now he's scarred for life.

How can I make him stop (tearfully sniffing) judging and discriminating based on fur color?

Refuse to sleep with him until he wears the right color underwear, which you won't tell him. (Pick something obscure, like purple leopard print.) When he fusses that the color doesn't make a difference, tell him the same thing goes for cats.

I agree the only way is to get him to spend time with one - go to a shelter they usually have all kinds of torties and calico's, show him that all torties can't be judged by the actions of one.

I to am ashamed to say I was once a kitty racist...I preferred cute fluffy colorful kitties and did not like plain old tabbies or black and white cats....I have been proven wrong on both counts. We owned a great tabby, my husband got him and I was set to not like the little guy but he was one of the best cats we ever had, I was so sad when he was run over by the car and died, we buried him under his favorite tree in the yard where the magpies would harass him as he tried to catch one...the second cat to change my mind is our cat max, who is black and white and he is the 2nd best cat we have had, he is not the smartest nor the best at really anything but cuddling and eating but it's his clumsiness that endears him to me and I can look past the boring black and white of his fur. So tell your husband that personality has nothing to do with the fur color, you may be passing up a awesome cat because he is afraid of it's color...I am happy to say I will never again judge a cat based on it's color.

Show him that your tortie is really a good and cute cat. Explain to him how if he can't like torties, things are going to get realy difficult between the two of you........

awww! kitties are just like people, he may have run into a bad bad kitty who just happened to be a tortie, that doesn't mean that they are bad kitties. i would find him one that you know is a sweetie and introduce them, I'm sure once he sees that sweet little face he will fall in love.

My husband said "Don't get a yellow one" when I left to get a kitten. I came back with Cornbread (a big, beautiful Ginger) and he's my husband's favorite cat! Sometimes you just gotta help the guys along!

Many people have irrational fears. A professional counselor should be able to help your husband with this, if he wants help.
